Here is an interesting little snippet, part of an AMG brochure, showing their prices for an AMG diff for your W116 at the time,

But do we know anyone with ABS fitted on their W116?

probably not within Australia

as far as I know only a european option at the time,

also remember at the time AMG was a German tuner, with reps in USA, I am unsure if they had suppliers here, I would doubt it, today Australia is 1% of MB global sales, can't have been any bigger back then.

I do know of a few genuine AMG cars within Australia but I would suspect they are imports,

I'm working on the prospect. There's a possibility of my fitting a secondhand ABS system to either Boris or Rolf; just have to confirm with my source that it's all in good condition (donor car was rear-ended).

The donor car was in Australia?
Was it a W116?

If it is the one I am thinking of John Green was wrecking a W123 with ABS a few months back.

I can't remember where I read it, might have been on the darkside or the M100 forum, but someone compared a 6.9 with and without ABS and the stopping distance difference from 60K's was 10 meters.

Makes you wonder why the 6.9 model didn't have ABS as standard once it came out.

Correct me if I am wrong but the brakes are the same as on a 280S as on a 6.9

Yes.

W123 - so I would need longer rear plumbing.

Am awaiting confirmation of diff ratio (comes with the diff centre) and a condition report. The vendor (who ought to know these things) assures me that apart from the rear lines and possibly the diff ratio it's likely right. (The donor had an M110 motor, so it's possibly the right ratio.)

Did you notice the diff ration shown? Its 3.06! In all the literature , road tests etc that I have read only 1 listed 3.06 as the rear axel ratio, all the rest show the ration as 3.07. My 450 has 3.06 stamped on the diff!

The chassis manual lists both ratios, with different ring and teeth numbers (obviously). I don't know if one is the small center and the other the large one.

John, it's quite possible you have an LSD then?? What you need to do (to test of course) is fang it round a tight corner at a decent speed and see if the inside wheel lifts off?!

I'm guessing the 3.46:1 'AMG' LSD is basically the same build that's in the 350SLC? I don't know what / if anything would 'diff'er between a 350SLC 3.46:1 LSD and an AMG 3.46:1 LSD?

Thoughts anyone?

AMG Diff - Possibly some shot peening and surface hardening as well as better tolerances if hand built.

In respect of ABS and 116's it only arrived for the 1978 model - by this time the 6.9 was yesterdays news.

I remember about 1980 when it became a bit more commonplace with the arrival of the 126 that everyone mistrusted it as expensive new technology that was probably unfixable if it gave trouble (Which it didn't) but nobody knew anyone who knew anything about it at the time.

AMG did have a close working business realionship with MB at the time, remember their pepped up motors came from MB brand new, so they probably got diffs as well from them.

Would seem logical, why bother getting someone to make diffs for you, or make them yourself with they are already available?

Was MB back in racing at this time? They got out of it after the terrible crash in 1955, if they weren't a good way of supporting racing unoffically.

From my experience I can make the following comments :

a) the 6.9 ABS limited slip diff is not the same as the non-ABS 6.9 LSD. The ABS unit has speed sensors.

b) the front hub carriers differ on the ABS cars - again they have ports for speed sensors.

Dear Bill

I once looked at in person a UK delivered 6.9 that had ABS, RHD car

Was that in Australia?
And if so, where is the car now?

I know this is getting off topic but the thing I was really suprised about was how bad the rust was, the car was rusted right through the boor, chassie, we are not talking about some rubbish made Japanese car, these things were made with thick metal, rust proofed, wax coated, thick paint etc...
