W116 gearbox change to either W126 or Supra.

Thanks to all for the input on options for a transmition change. I will follow up with Dellows but I would be interested to find out if anyone is aware of anyone who has actually converted their transmition to either a four speed W126 auto or a Supra five speed manual. Any info would be appreciated. Cheers to all Paul.

I have found some information that would lead me to believe that MB made a manual gearbox that would suit the W116.

It indicates the R107 came out with 4 or 5 speed manuals:

Now anyone out there with a manual R107? or any dismantlers with a manual gearbox...MB SPares for instance?

Just remember Dellows only make the bell housings, and possibly some other small items.

You still need all the other stuff to complete the conversion apart from the box and bell housing. These items include (but are not limited to): flywheel, clutch, gearbox mounts, clutch slave and master cyl, pedal box...

Its why when we locate a manual car in Aus we often regard it as both finding a needle in a haystack and a great burden lifted off our shoulders as its much easier to start out with a manual car than convert an auto to a manual (ask Oscar, owner of Povo the track car).

4 speed manuals were available for the 3.5 engine. 4 and 5 speeds on the 2.8 6cylinder cars. The rest were automatics.

There is a fellow on another forum with an AMG 500SL with a 5 speed.

Hi JohnS, that indeed will be an interesting conversion. It's funny how different people prefer different conversions for different reasons and, no doubt, come up with different assessments of that conversion (just got to be different).

Some three to four years ago, Silver Star Spares took part in, I think, the Variety bash. In the first year, the Ch. 109 300SEL 3.5 car they used was left pretty well standard, save for rallying necessities and they also eliminated the air bag suspension in favour of conventional springs. They had a satisfactory rallye.

The following year, they fitted the M117 450 engine, with the standard three speed box. When I asked them 'how things went' (among other things), they said that the 3 speed box was the much preferable choice. It would rev out better and that part of the conversion certainly got the 'thumbs up' sign.

Of course, the 126 four speeder is a vastly different box to the 108/109 automatic four speeders, so might fit the bill more nicely.Be interesting to get Delilah's opinion in due course. Regards Styria

Michel, I would love to be there but unfortunately on that day prior Christmas promises get in the way! If Delilah (W107) is there just listen to the reconditioned motor (more truthfully the combination of motor and exhaust system!) and the owner is over the moon with his new 126 gearbox /450 motor combination!
