Hi John thanks for that link. Quite interesting from a number of points. The beadblasting is almost mandatory before considering the painting of the wheels, primarily to get rid of old flaky clear. We painted some rims just recently, and luckily enough paint that had been put on previously only lifted on one wheel. This one we had to prime, but the rest responded to vigorous rubbing back and the 2 pack silver and clear came up well.

I am surprised that the guy on the net did not etch prime the rims after they had been beadblasted. In my view, that's an important function to get new paint to stick. Furthermore, he's using a pressure pack spray can - whilst he might be using the correct material, I have found that aerosol paint applications are never as long lasting as paint applied with a spray gun. Anyway, it's always interesting that there is more than one way to skin a cat. Regards Styria

Agreed, and etch primer should have been used.

Bead blasting is the normal perferred option, but for my 15" bundts I have tried something different - I had them chemically stripped by the ultrasonics place - and they look like brand new castings.

At the Mercedes Benz Club NSW preparation day at Club Concours (Lidcombe) on Saturday, a wheel repair expert came in and repaired some alloy wheels (this was not part of the display day, but I watched) on a car.

He had a special wheel rotation device / machine and a high speed type of disc grinder / polisher - while the wheel rotated he cleaned up all the curb scuffs and scratches on the alloy wheels (except fopr one wheels very badly gouged section) while not effecting the tyre. It was a very impressive performance. He could coat the wheel with a special paint too - seemed to be a Mercedes colour, but I was told it was only a very close match.

I did not know that there was this type of mobile service available until I saw the chap actually doing the job.

Hi JohnS, it is available and has been so for a while on ...basis - you know, right now I just can't think of the right word. Licensing, sub-contracting come to mind, but they are not the correct terms. Anyway, no matter the service is not cheap as I paid $160.00 to have some work done on one of my super-duper rims on Gleaming Beauty.

The guy was superbly organized, matched the colour very well indeed and it is only on close examination that one can detect where the work was carried out. It is a great service, but it is limited to fairly minor damage. Regards Styria

Nothing to do with the subject matter on hand, but I did think that this young lass would leave a llasting mpression with some of the afficionados on 'topklasse'.

The good bit is that I have promised myself that I will have to pass onto her the pics. that I took. Happy boy !

Anyway, I wanted to demonstrate between the Carlsson variety and the 'home-brew' produced by Mercedes. I do know that I have seen second hand Carlsson rims and fitted with used tyres at 8,890 Euros, but I hadn't been aware that the white car was a Carlsson until she filled me in on the details. Here's what I am alking about -I was going to call this segment 'The quads have it'. Ah well..
