Yes ESP is a god-send. But the other stuff sux!!!

Talking about safety, I was recently told that if you hit a pole (or tree) sideways above 30kmh without curtain airbags and you'll be toast. Side airbags will increase that critical speed slightly. A few questioned this submission, thinking the fatal speed would be much higher. They were given an interesting comparison: How fast can you run? (A = 30kmh). Now try running flat out at a pole and turn sideways just before you hit. Would you survive? The roof and side of a vehicle provide minimal protection, due to the deformation required to absorb the impact from a relatively narrow object and the distance between the side of the vehicle and the head of the occupant. Suddenly 30kmh seems fast!

Without boring you, let me say that a multitude of 'things' together make for a safer vehicle.

It's a combination of higher strength steel (various grades up to the point of not being able to cut some, even with an oxy), deformation zones to soften the final impact in the cabin and then comes the multitudes of airbags, from the facial, to the curtain (over the side windows), passing by the knee bags and the side bags.

There is a trial going on for roof-mounted bags that would drop in front of the driver and passenger at the same time and many other different air bag tests.

I was referring to all the other devices that make up the fun police (not speed limiters).... Traction control is great when you need to overtake, or pull out in a hurry and suddenly you lose power! ABS is lovely on a gravel road (not). Fly-by-wire is also brilliant when you put your foot down and the car decides when it wants to go (after a lengthy delay). And then there's the electronic transmission controls that seems to take forever to decide whether it probably should kick things down a gear or two. Not happy Jan.... Gimmie a pre-gizmo car any day!!!

Mark, if you get a chance, go to your MB dealer and ask to test drive a new C-Class... It's fabulous mate, the technology is fantastic and the reliability has come back to MB.

Mark whilst you are at your MB Dealer take the new E-Class sedan for a test drive very impressive!

I drove the E-Class 6 months when I was at Hunter Star Mercedes it was an experience this young bloke won't forget!

Cheers.

Mark,

You have to swear a solemn oath that, should you decide to sell any of your 6.9s, the first option to buy should be given to TK members.

Done, but don't hold your breath!!! :D

BTW my comments on responsiveness were based on VE Commodores generally and a 2009 CLC200 (supercharged) with paddle shifts. Unfortunately not that inspirational... At least the MB is comfy, reliable, economical and looks good! :)

The CLC was a disaster design and problematic from the beginning.

Honestly...
Give me VE SSV anyday

Mark you mentioned ABS issues mate, And if your issues were in an Aussie car then I agree as they mostly ran 2 and 3 channel systems because Aussie cars apparently dont need full 4 channel systems coz we dont drive on ice or snow........

And these smart bunnies seem to have forgotten about friggin gravel.

A decent 4 channel system however is fine on gravel and actually desensitises its response, but you wont find these systems on Aussie built cars because the accountants keep insisting we dont need it.

Then again my 2004 Elantra was excellent on loose surfaces and the ABS reacted accordingly with longer intervals between pulses and even on wet clay (Up the back of Gembrook and Kurth Kiln) it was a bonus. :)

As for ESP and traction control I guess it has its uses for those who are of limited ability behind the wheel although traction control craps me the most, I recall my ZF Fairlane had it fitted as standard....... Just peg the shift lever for the auto back to "2" instead of Drive and the car would take off in 2nd gear reducing slippage just fine.

And side curtain airbags do work, forget the stats as they are always manipulated to suit the occasion.

Any advantage in a collision....... is a good one.

Well gang the fuel mileage just blows me away but then I am used to the old V8 but when we filled it up in Melbourne and pulled out on to the freeway for five minutes it was showing 1068 km to go till empty and I don't doubt it. Around Wagga I'm averaging 7.5 to the 100 running short trips to work. Given the power it has with the turbo it's simply amazing that power for so little fuel!

We have now racked up 3500km since we got it and all I can say is this has to be one of the best built packages Mercedes has ever done. It does everything so well without being over the top to use or look at. It's just plain good at everything you throw at it without being excessive.

Here's the most pleasant surprise of all servicing at the dealer is a real difference from cars past. The A service cost exactly the same as a New Commodore!!!

If you want a car that looks good drives well and does everything just right the W204 is the car for you.

Cheers Mat.

Hey Mat very impressive fuel consumption the C-Class has!

Already travelled 3500kms I bet ever kilometre has been great.

Beautiful looking C-Class Mat and I might even ask the owner for a spin in the C-Class I will wait to wait until the Concours in September but it will be worth the wait!
