Good evening guys
It’s been awhile since my last post, unfortunately life has been getting in the way.
I’ve managed to get back out to my property and I’ve been continuing the Ever growing project which is my 1978 6.9.
In this most recent week, my attention and efforts has been directed towards my original Hirschmann antenna (a weeklong process of dealing with corrosion and a frozen original Hirschmann mast).
The other task for which I have dedicated time is to addressing the ignition key barrel for which due to the original keys now being somewhat worn, the internal leaves have needed to be disassembled, filed down (to match the worn key) reassembled, and then lubricated with some PTFE lubricant.
Happy to now announce that I have a working and correctly, timed Hirschmann electric antenna, and an ignition barrel that doesn’t bind and cause steering lock/starting issues.
The job that is giving me the most satisfaction however is the reinforcement of the front driver and passenger seat springs. I was viewing some content on YouTube and come across a YouTuber with an account by the name of “woodsandbarclay”.
This chap appears very learned in the subject of W116 W123 and W126 chassis vehicles.
Please see attached below the photos I’ve taken of the installation of supporting springs (general and universal house furniture chair, springs, with an 8 gauge strength).
alongside this, I then took to ensuring both driver and passenger front seat seats were well lubricated prior to reinstallation, the fore and aft function of both seats as well as the raise and lowering function have now been restored to an acceptable standard.
I’ll post a separate thread regarding the antenna repair story as after all, it doesn’t belong in this section as it is an exterior item.
Really enjoying my project and I’m grateful every day for owning this now, somewhat rare and rewarding vehicle.
