Recommendations for a new small car

Don't be surprised if she doesn't go for any of these recommendations above.
Personally, I'd ask if she has an 'aspirational top 5' then give her the research on each.

Yes - you are right. We are assuming we know best!!! Of course, we may not have a clue what she wants and it could be she would prefer to be seen in an Alfa Romeo soft top or an MX5.

Personally I like the Veloster and Focus for the money, but I haven't driven either.... yet. What about the Volvo c30?? It looks the part, but might be too $$ and she may not wanna be seen in one anyway! I'm tipping the new MB A-Class will be too $$. More research to follow....

Actually, if I was a 24 year old female I'd probably go for a Volkswagon Polo ....... or a W126

VWs are great until you break one and have to fix it! Engine pipes and exhaust?? Ouch!

The Polo really is a poor mans Golf and the poverty pack Golf is a bit ordinary as well, Look into the origins of the Polo and you will find that the 6R model shares platform with Seat's Ibiza and the A1 Audi.

The 6R is far better than the earlier models but still a very basic car in many respects and the engine choice in Australia is underwhelming to say the least with the diesels probably being a better choice than the petrol variants available here.

I looked at these a few years ago as driving school cars in both Auto and Manual because they were Corolla priced and well engineered but having to spend all day in them would be an awful experience and they were fairly sloooow to drive.

Back to Hyundai methinks.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but the Volvo V40 looks like a good piece of kit, but won't be released until late 2012 at the earliest...

I like my new Honda Jazz.

Small on the outside and large on the inside with an enormous amount of clever design - oh and fun to drive with a 1500 motor.

All the cars with the exception of a Mazda 2 and a small Hyundai are larger cars.

What young person keeps a car for five years anyway.

We test drove a few new cars today:

Focus; rubbish,
VW Golf; too expensive,
Mazda 3; dated inside and out, but very smooth and quiet. Good fuel consumption for the SP20 Skyactive. Rubbish spacesaver with no room for a full size spare,
Hyundai Veloster; didn't drive due to impracticality... No headroom in rear seats. Small boot. Space saver. Unusual configuration: one door RHS, two doors LHS (WTF!),
Hyundai i30 Premium; just released. Apparent limited availablity; 3-4 month wait so we were told. Lovely in and out with all the bells n whistles including dual sunroof! Harsh and noisy on the road and a little underpowered.

Although we ruled out diesels initially, as the pumps are often out in the weather for trucks and you tend to get diesel all over your hands (with the smell), we're warming to the idea. On paper the Mazda diesel has heaps of grunt and the Hyundai may be better than the petrol. We're keen to have a drive of both soon. But they are more expensive than their petrol siblings.

Ruled out; the Volvos (too expensive), Citroen (limited dealer support & expensive parts), Kia (not well estabilished with poor resale), Suzuki (Swift dated, Kizashi too dear), Renault (limited dealer support), Audi & BMW (too dear), Peugeot (yuk)....

LOL MARK i thought we talk about a car for 24 years old female , your observation about the veloster exactly as mine, try the ELANTRA looks cool ,

did you think of the MINI cooper S could be expenssive too but very populer for young generation.
