Well, it looks as though this (very old) thread has the makings of going a bit off topic. No matter, we are flexible so Ill grab the opportunity to say Hi ! to AM1961. Hope you'll like us and I certainly look forward to pics of your car - try using Photobucket if that's convenient.

Regarding 6.9 re-cores, a maximum of $520.00 should see it out - that's been the last price I paid for mine when something of whatever description destroyed my Radiator and Water Pump about two and a half years ago. Regards Styria

Hooray.
Trip to Vic Roads Oakleigh this morning and "The Cruiser" is now registered.

Roadworthy consisted of:
Windscreen
Tyres
L/h headlight
Minor Oil leaks
Tie rod(slight bend)
Wheel alignment

Mechanicals done:
Injector hoses replaced
Manifold pressure sensor repaired.

The most expensive bit was L/h rear quarter panel minor rust repair and respray. But, a great job was done. Very happy.

Not bad for a car that will 38 next month.

Pics to follow.

Off for a drive now.

Andrew.

Well done, Andrew. That's quite a number of repairs that you have had carried out, and I am sure that it will give you the opportunity to enjoy the car fully. Regarding the number of 'looks' - it's just a little shy off the leading thread - it has attracted more than ten thousand lookers. I am glad that you're feeling comfortable to post. Regards Styria

AM 1961 Very nice example of the 116 Congratulations!!.... I know I'd be proud of it..

Something additional under the "useless trivia" dept,.........

I notice the aerial mounted on the front fender. 1974 was about the time the last Aussie spec RH drive mercedes was permitted to be fitted with front mounted aerial. My dads 116 came also thru Lanes in 1975 (Stuttgart delivery) and I remember (as a kid) the sales guy at Lanes saying 1 of the 'differences' with the 1975 delivery would be the aerial would be mounted on the rear. Aussie design rules introduced that year considered the front mount distracting to the driver. This was just a hangover from making the car RH drive. It was fine where it was for LH drive markets.

More trivia from the past?

1975 was also the year Lanes was putting in Aussie made seat belts in some 116 models because the ones supplied from Germany were (stupidly) not considered compliant with Australian design rules introduced that year.
Upon arrival to Oz in 1976 my dads 116 had to have them changed at a huge cost at the time just to get his Vicroads compliance plate.
Common sense prevailed however late in 1976 when the German factory supplied belts were finally approved for Oz and the factory originals were allowed to be re-installed. They are on the car to this day. I think the temporary ausie made belts were cutand ended up being used as tow ropes up on the family property.
As I said..............just more useless trivia!

Perhaps we could write a book one day about the History of the 116 Downunder. I reckon ther'd be some interesting little tid-bits to read about.

Fascinating how times change and develop.
However, I bought a Holden Camira new in 1984 and it had the aerial at the front so maybe it was not Australian design rules that determined where the aerial should be at that time?
Now before you collapse on the floor, I did 200,000 Kms in the Camira and sold it 4 years later for the same price as I paid for it. It was a tight and well-constructed car.
Regards,
Brian

Nothing wrong with Camira's Brian, they just suffered from Euro scare tactics the same as a lot of euro cars at that time.

Service them well and they were a nice car.

Had a JD wagon and it wasnt a bad thing at all.

Andrew that is very nice 350SE you have there mate!

Good to see another S-Class with chrome wheel arches which I think look terrific on the W116 and W126 Series.

Enjoy the Mercedes Andrew.

Cheers Tim.
