Your guess is as good as mine until the official results are emailed.

On my 2nd heat I got a 1:51.92 and on Cams 3rd heat he got a 1:52.78

It would be good if he could get into the 1:51 range. Just gotta chuck that car around a bit more, the right way.

Lucky for that misfire repair which made me skip heat 1, because he I run it then Cam would have fried his brakes and heat 3, and not got to run 4 heats.

I believe his trailer started to do the snaky-snaky dance on the way back to CBR, limiting his road speed to 100km/h.

The 6.9 made an ideal tow car with an acceptable fuel economy. Maybe oscar can upload a 6.9 towing 116 race car photo today?

Cam went up to see results of his last session before he left and I left as he was going up there so I didn't hear what he got. I just thought you might have copped a ribbing if his last session came in quicker.;)

Wouldn't be much of a ribbing... its his car... you'd expect him to run rings around me..

I thought scrutineering went well. (photo request)

What did they ask you to change?? Just a catch can and bonnet pins yeah?

What did they ask you to change??

To another car just about. It's the first time I've experienced a tough scrutineering. Frowns all round at the furriness of the interior.:D To be fair they were just pointing out the obvious like holes in the rear firewall and fuel tank visible. Even though it's passed like this before I can't complain. Of most concern to them was the first aid kit hole which was taped up temporarily for this meet. Suspension holes, I put the plastic caps back in there and the speaker holes don't open up to the tank area anyway so they were left.

They just don't like the idea of the two factory side bonnet catches as supplementary restraints for the bonnet. I'll either put bonnet pins on or wire straps on the interior of the bonnet.

Catch can - perhaps the biggest query. I'm not experienced with only a handful of races under my belt but I've tried to read regs and CAMS rules so I don't stuff up. In a performance setup where clean air is desirable for combustion, crankcase vapours go into a catch can which can condensate the fluid and release clean air via a filter into the atmosphere or that air can be recirculated into a the air intake again. So that's what I thought the idea of an oil catch can was - a performance thing so the engine isn't rebreathing and recombusting blowby gases and oil vapour.

As you said Ian, that crap being recycled is going to lower octane and fuel/air mix quality with the overall result being a loss of power. The reason I was given for needing an oil catch can was because my car wasn't road registered. It could be written, I don't know and I'm not going to look. I've wanted to put one on anyway hoping for a performance gain. When you're as slow as me you need it. It just sounded like an odd rule that a road registered car on the track can stick with OEM setup but a track car can't.

In the end I was given the go ahead so long as things were fixed for next comp and temporary measures were taken to cover up rear firewall holes. It was amusing though that Cam wasn't subjected to the rear firewall holes scrutiny, but he did get spoken to about bonnet restraints and the catch can.

Lining up for scrutineering.

Discussing catch cans, or lack of.

Interesting reading and pics, thanks. I don't get why an unregistered car would need to have one of those catch can thingos, but anyway. I wonder if the dry sump in a 6.9 is considered equivalent?

The 690SE is having some rear end sag issues - hydro suspension would fix that nicely:)

Nah, dry sump is a different kettle of fish but is desirable none the less. But you guys still have two breather hoses coming from each of your cam covers that work on recovering and recycling crankcase vapours. Same as the other V8s. So hypothetically, if it wasn't registered and you wanted to compete the same catch can rule would apply.

Where the 6.9 does have an advantage is that the dry sump setup will always supply oel to the pump, so long as you don't drive it upside down I suppose. The dangers for an M110 or M116/7 is that G-forces can send the oel sideways in the sump and crankcase leaving the oel pump's pickup not submerged, sucking in air rather than oel. An already lower than max oel level which is particularly common with our engines as they consume a bit during a session, plus prolonged heavy cornering could see oel starvation with overheating and possible seizure. I'm not 100% up with the 6.9 oel system but because of its separate tank it's oel supply isn't affected by G-forces in the same way.

I'll try to put this back on topic.

Catch can is mandatory on non-registered cars as most non-reg cars are also not running emissions controls or original crankcase breathers. Engines are also typically modified and produce more oil junk out the breathers.

Another theory goes that if the car ends up on its roof the oil needs somewhere to go, though no one has ever seen a catch can that actually works in this scenario, gravity being what it is and all...

Anyhoo, they are not expensive or pose too much of a weight penalty, my RX4 simply had an empty 5L oil bottle held in the engine bay with 2 cable ties, and a pair of hoses, one to the engine (there's no cam covers on a rotary so the breather is on the oil filler neck) and the other to the air filter. The only cost was the hoses with totalled about $10. The one on my 190 cost about $2.75 because I used even cheaper polypropylene hose.

More pics of this race day to follow when I get home.

Awsome Ian, I didn't know there was any external video of povo. I've never heard the exhaust before. Can't wait to go home and listen to it thru some decent speakers, these work ones are crappy.

Here's all the incar vids. There's no povo ones because I should explain that I only completed one session. The next session which saw myself and Ian in (possibly the first time two TeamW116 cars have been placed in the same group other than a track day??) But povo gave out before completeing one lap in that session. Carby broke.

Cam 1st session http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7d16eqN-da8&feature=channel

Ian 1st session http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQkedWKagDw&feature=channel

Cam 2nd session http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kq9frWyDlYs&feature=channel

Cam 3rd session with a bit of external footage of Ian's second session, then I ran out of tape. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rRYQ1VtCRI&feature=channel

Hi guys, your commitment to your racing activities is quite exceptional. I have a bit of an idea of the amount of time, and money, that goes with this type of activity - used to race and take the kids trail bike riding and, believe me, the work is never ending.

I've watched and helped Cam to load up ol' Silver onto that trailer of his, and that in itself is an exercise and a half. Thanks for putting up all your details and photos on 'topklasse'.

Again, at the moment I really can't watch videos on account of download speeds, but I am certainly looking forward to doing so once my Interspeed is restored. Regards Styria
