I was recently involved with a 1976 Rover 3500, mainly relating to some trim work and some assessment of one or two mechanical (fuel) issues that an acquaintance who had bought the car recently from a Used Car Dealer located at Granville. I am bringing up this matter more on the basis of car purchase and presentation. The owner concerned is NOT a person used to owning a fairly new or recent vintage vehicle and presumably purchased the car on the spur of the moment. Looking at this car in some detail, I came to the conclusion that presentation is everything when offering a car for sale. To the uninitiated, nice chromed bumper bars front and rear, plus re-upholstered seats looking good but in vinyl and not leather, plus an attractive French Blue, was all that was needed to convince the owner to purchase the car. Little did he notice, and probably even unaware, the abominable quality of the paintwork on bonnet and roof, and a number of trim items in the boot of the car that should have sounded alarm bells. Obviously, that didn't happen.
When I came to remove the scuttle panel below the front screen to have the front screen rubber replaced, it really showed up a true picture of a car that had led a very hard and neglected life. I think the attached photos will illustrate the sorry state of neglect and "butchery" the car had been subject to. It really was quite horrible. There was Silastic that was rock hard, a sealing rubber totally rotten and this all had to be attended to. What is the moral of the story in this instance ? Presentation is everything to the unknowing - had the owner seen what I will be illustrating, he would never have bought the car. Have a look at the attached photos. Regards Styria
