lacks one critical part though, a bonnet star you can when you drive the car.

Yes, that's one thing I wouldn't be able to live without. As good as SL's and the like are, It's nice to have the upright mascot on the grille.

Yes, you would always feel the car is missing its anatomy, its soul.
SL's are the traditional car to be star less, seems more common nowdays on the C Class cars, which make up the bulk of the new cars on the road.
A somewhat related situation....
I drive the W126 280SE the most of my Benzes, because I can take it anywhere and park it anywhere without fear of scratches, etc...
However, I NEEEEEEED to drive the 690SEL every once in a while to get the adrenaline pumping and enjoy my toy.
The sensation of driving the W126 is of a loooooong bonnet and a Star way ahead....
The 690SEL has a much shorter bonnet and thus closer Star.... The sensation is that of driving a small and nimble car.

Know what you mean Michel, out of all the Benzes I have owned, the W114 has the best front, the guards are nicely shaped, so you can see them, the curves.
Then there is the bonnet star and the fake ornamental radiator cap base, I haven't measured it, but the star seems bigger than any other Benz I have owned. love the way when you give it a quick smile, it beems back and shines.
