Tyre choices

Looking at a few different tyres for the S211. Anyone have any experience with:

- Michelin Primacy 3ST
- Pirelli p1
- Bridgestone T001
- Continental Ultra contact 6
- Hankook Ventis 452

I am currently leaning towards the michelins. Best price I have found so far is $199 per tyre at Jax.
Size is 255/55 R16

I’ve had Contis 5 on my CLK430 for a few years and I’m not overwhelmed.
They’re quiet, but not fantastic in the wet.
As a matter of fact, if it wasn’t for the anti skid in the Benz, I think I would have lost the car in many occasions (not driving silly or fast).
They also seem to have worn quickly, especially at the front.

We get about 30,000 ks from the Continentals on the front of the CLK - not impressive is it and they do tend to thump over line markers and cat eyes. You can't rotate them to even the wear because the front and rear are different sizes and the tyres are directional.
The Pirelli Scorpions on the ML wear well but squirm on a corner.
I have never had a problem with a Michelin - except once blowing a front Michelin tyre at around 80 mph on the Flavia - but the tyre was beyond its safe life anyway and I should not have been using it.

Thanks for the input. I've ordered the Michelins and they will get fitted to the car monday Morning. I've also had good experiences with Michelins, and i've also had good experiences with Yokohama's before as well.

my experience with cheap tyres is that they are a false economy if you're going to have the car more than 18 months or so. I've also found used tyres even if good tread get hard and are terrible in the wet.

When I still had the 14"s on my SLC most tyre places only offered budget tyres in that size. You may need to call a number of places or one of the specialist type shops to see what they can do. Make sure they don't sell you light truck tyres!

Goodyear’s are rubbish. I’ve had good experiences with Bridgestone RE02s but they’re not cheap. Toyos are quite good for the price & are very quiet when new (and stay that way).

Good luck with 14s... Pity ‘they’ don’t make any with white lettering anymore; only white walls which aren’t exactly muscle car correct!! Try Coker Tyres. I hear Michelin are making some 14s again but not with the correct load or speed ratings for the 6.9.

I have Hankook Optimo K715 214/75R14 on my 6.3 and they are actually bloody good. The grip is progressive and, like old times, they talk to you! On a recent drive up the Putty the fronts would squeal politely before under steering very gently while the rears would chirp then grip under power out of bends, totally in character with the car!

For some years, I have had only limited experience with tyres. For the Holden Captiva, I settled for new Michelins about a year and a half ago. I am entirely satisfied with service obtained from them, and it is quite remarkable how well they cope with wet conditions.

I also purchased Maxx tyres for one of my client's 6.9 - I think they were the correct 14"ers and I experienced no difficulties or shortcomings with a limited amount of driving only. I guess when in doubt, one of the better Michelin varieties is the way to go. Regards. Styria

I remember talking to the owner of a tyre store when I got some new Tyres for my 250SE he said the Porsche Cayenne is educating his children as they cost about that much and go through tyres like the rest of us go through hot dinners.

That’s one of the reasons these high maintenance cars drop dramatically in value!

A friend in Melbourne bought a Goodwood Phantom. Not happy with the standard runflat tyres and lack of a spare he had 5 new wheels forged and fitted with conventional tyres and chucks a standard spare in the boot. He next bought a Ghost for his wife. Interestingly, the dealer delivered it with newly forged wheels and conventional tyres .....
Therein lies a tale of how stupid runflats truly are and how they can be worked around provided you have the money and the nous.

I run 205 / 70/ 14 Dunlop SP LM 703 made in Indonesia. They squeal a little too much for my liking around corners.

Anyone had recent experience with Serbian XWX Michelins? Are they like the original French made ones?

The car runs 14 inch alloys. A couple of years ago was thinking of upgrading to 15 inch Benz alloys. I rang Benz and they told me $3000 per rim plus VAT!!!

They are a lot cheaper now as they are re-manufacturing them. From memory around $500 per corner when they run one of the specials they do a few times a year.
