Here, here.. Herr Godfather.

I commend your professional approach as stated above. ;)

Freedom of speech still requires governance... Otherwise there's no order and as you stated things get "a little out of hand".

Cam2. :)

It is a pity that a size 10 font has had such a big impact!! :D

It's probably a bit late to chime in with "skidpan days are on roads under controled conditions, and under strict supervision" but anyway. Sounds like it was a whole lotta fun on the day. The look on the faces of everyone seeing the car doing its thing would have been priceless! :D

I'll see if i can dig out some pics tomorrow before i go overseas...

Had lots of fun trying to 'lose' a car with ESP on water

It was a car launch and sometimes, car companies want to prove to you that their 'ESP' set up is fabulous, so they go to extreme situations (under control always) whereby they prove to you that the average driver would benefit from having the ESP set up in a situation where he /she might be losing the car in a skid, and it 'fixes' itself.

For the average journo, it's a chance of having fun and pushing the car to its limits.

There are no tasks.... just lotsa fun.

I will try and find pics when I get to the office this morning and post them..:D

PICS!!! Must see pics!! I hear good things about Skoda.

What was it like with the ESP? Was it hard to fight it?

Hi guys, I am very curious about this - skid pans. I have never participated in a test like this, and whilst I know that it is all about car control, car behaviour etc. etc., is there in fact any undue stress placed on suspension and steering components.

Naturally, one would assume that tyres take a bit of a hammering, but I am just wondering about any other components. Regards Styria

If you're doing it (skidding) with water present, then there isn't much stress on the car.
It's when you do it on dry tarmac (assuming you have enough power to do so)that the pressure gets to every component
And that is called drifting....:p

Good photography Michel!! ;)

Spot on too. With the water there, it hardley places any stress at all... and it's also about stepping it out a little bit further each time. Not just going hammer and tong the first time out there.

The vehicle basically will just keep spinning on the spot if you hold the throttle hard enough.

The only time the vehicle stresses is if people have a heavy right foot they can't control.. The casualties during the day I was there, was (in my opinion) because people were not concentrating on the tacho / rev levels.
If you're holding the throttle and a certain level rather than just flooring it the car will sit there all day and not really strain (too much). :)

Suspension, can't speak for the hydro all round... i'd imagine it wouldn't be too stressfull though.. Just really depends how hard you're throwing it into corners.. Of course, i'm sure MB built them to withstand things like this during testing?! To handle on those icy german roads during winter.

You know your 'Gleaming Beauty' would just love to attend a Skid Pan day!! ;)

That doesn't sound good mate. :(

Is that relating to head gasket etc??

Hi Cam2, yes, I am almost 100% certain that it is a head gasket issue. I suspect I also have an exhaust valve issue on No.6 cylinder and I just want to fix these annoying problems. The strange part is that apart from water usage, the engine still pulls like a freight train as the exhaust leak appears to be evident only at very low revs or idling at the lights. Still, it's got to be done. Will keep you guys posted - at the moment, abl 567 is kindly assisting me with the purchase of genuine head gaskets.

I could have had gaskets made up locally, but it's my understanding that they would have been too thick and thereby the compression would have been reduced to about 8:3 to 1. Regards Styria

N.B. Incidentally, if anyone is interested in purchasing a new set of standard size rings, you willneed just short of $2 grand. Sad, isn't it.

Sorry to hear mate... :(

Good to hear you're on the case though...

I'm contemplating a head service on the 450 in the next 12months. After the July event at Sandown, followed by the day at Eastern Creek, it'll be going into the garage for quite awhile.. and during this time would ideally love to do the re-build...and with a hint of a price like that on rings....that's why it'll be there for about 12months.

A search for something else and I found this old thread. Looks like heaps of fun even though Cam only had a single spinner! Looks like the price of parts was an issue even back then. Sorry it sounds like someone took things a bit too seriously....

Guys we should organise a TK skidpan day!!! Followed by a day at Winton....
