Watching Fifth Gear on FOX last night.

There was a silver E55 AMG on the show last night.

Also Audi Quattro, VW GTi , Mercedes E55 AMG.

Comparison between the Classic Mercedes, Audi & VW and there modern counterparts.

I will try and find a video of the episode as it was quite interesting.

Very good video! It's very hard to make an argument that old is better than new but there is a few comments that I should add:

1. There's no way you'll win on old, narrow high profile tyres,
2. There's no point racing against the other when you get blocked and can't explore the limits of the car,
3. The new cars are so insulated and with all the electronics going on they leave you very detached from the experience,
4. The new cars don't give you the grin of the old ones,
5. All the new cars look the same until you're up close.

The new engines are a lot more fuel efficient and sometimes more powerful, but you can certainly make an older engine boogie if it's a good design and you know what you're doing,

The new transmissions are way better than the old ones. You can make old ones stronger but they're much harder (if not impossible) to improve....

Still very impressive the E55, but it shows you what an extra few gears on the transmission can do.

Hence why I am still looking at going down that path. And it will allow fitting shorter rear gears and still have lower highway revs. I feel the need for speed

The 1999 E55 AMG W210 was my favourite from episode.

That E55 for a 5 speed auto still a very quick car that is 15 years old.

That VW Golf GTi 1980's model had very small Avon tyres fitted to the car!

And having driven both a E55 and E430 W210 . E55 is nice to say you own E430 is the one you want to drive and take home. One is like a mistress the other like a friend for life.
