Now that is how an S-Class coupe should look. Not that SL inspired front end. I always thought the W124 looked so much more sophisticated than the W126 coupe.

Hi Des, what an excellent selection of pictures. I mean, looks and quality wise, the W140 left little to be desired. It's a great pity that service, parts, repairs and maintenance can be of such huge expense.

I guess that S - cLass will not have a bad word levelled against one, yet I am sure that his 500 must have just about broken his spirit. Regards Styria

Nice pictures Des, but very cruel - I'm crying. I will definately own another W140 - ideally a black on black 600 LWB for occasional use, and a 320 SWB for daily use.

I seriously want a black on black pre-facelift LWB 600 with chromed exahust tips, black windows, black wheels with polished lip.

Unfortuately you need to be quite wealthy to operate one of these technical masterpieces.

They are probably at that point as Ryan knows where they need a lot of money spending on them to keep them on the road.

Talking to my Body man Jerry about the W140 one day, he went on about it in Arabic and he called it the 'Ghost'.
I enquired what he meant and found out that a lot of Lebanese smash repairers have named Benzes to simplify their identification without having to use the W140 etc.. naming
Thus the W140 is know as the Ghost...

I just stumbled across this thread the other day. In my opinion, it was one of Des' finest threads, with plenty of great pictures to marvel at. Those were the early formative days of TK, and posts also featured Martin 280S in Brazil, and 116 Benz in Queensland. In those days, it was Michel and Des going blow for blow in the post count, and it took many months for others to catch up and pass Des.

Des had the happy knack of finding, and posting, some great pictures, and he was particularly fond of '30s cars and military musings, and he also had the knack of finding some great pictures from yesteryear. It'd be nice to have those guys back again. I do know that Martin 280S took his "Genevieve" off the road, but he was hopeful of reviving her fortunes and post again. This of course hasn't happened thus far, and I do believe that he did, in fact, buy a W140 of some description. Des, of course, got involved with VWs and a Mercedes170 - so I believe. Anyway, just recounting some of the old times of TK. Regards Styria
