The wider 6.5's were reserved for the 6.9 so I have been told

Des, I've heard that before in respect to Aus delivered cars, though I thought maybe the 4.5's also got the wider ones.

Here in South Africa, all locally assembled 280SE, 350SE, R107 supplied with Bundts got 6.5" items, so they are plentiful here. In fact, the 6" ones are rare, having only been fitted to some W123's it seems. I'm willing to be corrected, but this is my understanding.

6" were fitted to 123s and, according to my owner's manual the standard tyre size for a W116 280SE was 6", although it does not mention wheel choices, I guess if alloys were specified, they would be 6" too. The 350SE and 450SE list 6 1/2".
I like that little Euro touch about 'summer tyres' and 'winter tyres'!

Now what would be exciting for the W116 would be either a set of 'hen's teeth' 15" Bundts or 15" pressed steel rims and embelishers a la W100!
