Another car that could've been used in the Back to the Future series! The years haven't improved the way they look....

And out of the red corner comes another opinion....
Frankly, I think the Lagonda is one of the sleekest, smartest, most unique designs ever to flow from the artist's pen. I'd have one in a shot if I had the cash to spare. Problematic? Only the LED instruments - and they can be fixed if there is enough in the piggy bank.
I've driven one for a short distance and thought it to be light years ahead of just about everything else available at the time - and that is probably true even now.
Yes, you would need to be brave to own and use one but do we want to spend all of our lives living in a world of grey sludge and predictability?
Regards,
Brian

I do think that tastes vary from person to person, and I know that BenzBoy has always had a soft spot for this William Towns designed Lagonda. In my opinion, it is a horribly styled motor car - all kinds of well executed angles that extend to the interior with totally marginal leg room in the back. One would need very deep pockets to own and maintain one.

I much prefer the 1962 Lagonda Rapide (that just flows off your tongue), which was David Brown's love child (or creation) with Aston Martin DB5 engine and 5 speed ZF manual transmission or an automatic gearbox in the shape of the old Borg Warner DG box - very sturdy, and apparently well used in second world war troop carriers, as well as Humber Super Snipes, Jaguar and Rover, to name some.

There is another Lagonda Rapide circa 1978 - essentially a 4-door Aston Martin - would anyone be able to find one on the Internet ? Geoff (Motec6.9, Benz Boy ?). Regards Styria (Michel, 260 Benz) ?

Well yes, BenzBoy, this is the David Brown version. They were fitted with the 5 speed ZF box, the Borg Warner DG Auto, but some also received the 4 speed David Brown box. As a matter of interest, and to correct the published specifications, the engine was in fact the 4 litre DB5 Aston engine. Incidentally, I still have two brochures of this Rapide that were sent to me from England.

However, this is not the car I posed the query on. There was another model, produced round about 1978, that was an Aston with four doors. I even have a road test somewhere amongst my magazines, but I thought I would raise the query on TK first. Regards Styria

Hi BenzBoy, I have not been able to trace it. I know they produced the four door model, and it was the four door PRIOR to the one that you like. So, it had to be in the seventies and, from memory, it may have been fitted with the V8 engine. Regards Styria

Well, at long last, we have found the long lost, and forgotten, Aston Martin Lagonda Rapide - doesn't that name just flow off your tongue like honey down the hatch - I am a bit biassed, and probably silly, but if the talk turns to cars at the Club or in the pub, the question would be ".....and what do you drive" ? and one would succinctly state "ah well, I drive a Lagonda Rapide". End of discussion, except perhaps ....do they use them on the canals in Venice. Stupid Godfather...ah well.

HI Geoff, I have only just seen your post, and your detective work is amazing. I knew about the car, because I had read the road test that's now in the PDF file. I had found it a couple of days ago, but I had to wait until today to be shown how to create a PDF file.

There are a couple of others that I have posted, and I have collected a significant amount of material dealing with unusual, also rare, but in addition desirable cars that any of us would be proud to own. There is quite a bit to come - it is my way of promoting TK not only as a useful 116 and 107 site, but I also would like to think that TK caters for the genuine enthusiast. Regards Styria

N.B. There is no doubt in my mind that the Lagonda Rapide of 1962-1964 has always been one of my dream cars. I have only ever seen two in the flesh. One belonged to a chap called Whitehead who had a magnificent home at Warrawee (he was the architect that designed Roselands Shopping Centre) and that car now lives on a property somewhere near Armidale or Walcha. The other I spotted about ten years ago at a Double Bay auction conducted by Goodmans, then auction hose. It fetched $25K. in good, used condition, and at that auction they sold the ex Rene Rivkin 600 Grosser (in magnificent condition) for a paltry $40K. to Chinese interests. Ah, if one only had the folding stuff.

Hi Styria you want rare i know there is a white Monteverde sedan in Australia it used to go to wheels in Canberra . I spoke to the owner one year and he stated that his was the only sedan in the country and he knew the owner of the coup'e that was in the country as well. Apparently they were both brought in for the 1972 Melbourne Motor show. http://www.philseed.com/monteverdi.html . Or how about this Bristol at Rolling Ray Gulsons in Canberra http://www.gulson.com.au/VehiclesListing.asp?Stock_No=B410 :D

Hi BenzBoy, you have got me absolutely bedazzled with science. I have absolutely no idea of what you are either talking about, or else, are referring to. To quote one of my (many) favourite ladies - please explain. Regards Styria
