The all alloy air cleaner box on my 6.9 is from a w126 560 also.
There is no room for twin induction trumpets in a 6.9 engine bay. Both trumpets were simply removed, extra airways cut out of the sides of the box and alloy gauzed over, riveted into place.
The alloy air cleaner box lid was buffed shiny, and sprayed with clear laquer, to retain the bright metal shine.
Now, the engine bay of my 6.9 looks to be a brighter and less dingy place, and I think the engine would be a little happier, with slightly easier breathing.
I probably have 4x of the single choked down trumpet area available for air flow into the standard air filter.
I have retained to original black painted 6.9 air cleaner box, with the single choked down trumpet that allows for the chain cover clearance.
The 450 diff, new stainless steel exhaust, small induction improvements, and new 225 60 VR 15 tyres with 1.6 % less outside circumference combine make the old girl much more throttle responsive, and an even more pleasant and satisfying car to drive.
A bonus is that with the 450 diff, there is less torque converter slippage with normal driving, resulting in slightly better fuel economy, in spite of the slightly higer revs for speed. A negative is slightly less top speed, but how many of us get to do 235 km/hr on our roads?
