Hi Geoff, as much as I like the Bristol and the Aston Martins, I personally think that the Monteverdi is just beyong reproach styling wise. I mean, both cars are just absolutely magnificent styling wise - I would just love to see one in the flesh, and snap away with my camera.Did I say styling wise twice ? I guess I can be excused - there are two cars.

I can understand why the Astons appeal to you with their perceived aura of muscle cars, and they would be awesome machines - just as an aside, how could anyone, and I mean anyone, want to pay three times as much (at least) for a Ford Falcon GTHO. BTW, I have driven two Aston Martin DB6s - what delightful and positive steering, and a sweet and sonorous free revving engine - blip the throttle and 4.5K. would be on the tacho as quick as you could look. Ahhh - Styria is blond (truly, he is) you know and may not have seen it. (NO blond jokes unless you want to wake up with a slab of whale meat beside you folks...). I rather like the Bertone Genesis. It looks useful.

Well I gotta say that Raptide quite beautiful!! At first glance I didn't even realize it was a four door!!! MB should look at it for inspiration with the CLS.....

No - nothing untoward Mr P. By the way, an Emeritus Professor is one that has retired. I can't do that yet unless someone donates huge amounts to my super fund - and I can't see that happening in the near future.
I was referring to Motec's comment that no-one had responded to him - and I explained that you were blond (well you were the last time I saw youi some years back) - and then lo and behold you ansered him as I was typing a reply.
So yes; the science involved here was the movement of the earth around the sun causing time to wobble just that little bit while we were both posting!

Just reverting to the Rapide of 1962-1964 vintage. It took quite a while for them to become collectable despite their heritage. There was a weakness with the rear drive train - so I believe. The car had De Dion rear suspension, with sliding spline driveshafts. There was no protection from a universal drive joint, and as a consequence, under hard acceleration the splines would twist and become unserviceable.

With a DeDion arrangement, , the wheels stay perpendicular to each other irrespective of road conditions, so when the splines would twist, there was insufficient sliding compensation of the driveshafts when encountering irregularities inthe road surface. At least, that's how it has been explained to me. Regards Styria

N.B. Incidentally, the Rover P6 and P6B range (2000 & 3500 - 1969/1976) had universal jointed flanges attached to the differential, which was flexibly bolted to the chassis, with inboard disc brakes, and a sliding tube attached to the hubs took care of road irregularities. A brilliant design for its time as it was used on Formula 1 racing cars, and the additional cost of the system, in 1963, was an additional thirty five pounds sterling compared with a solid axle arrangement. Just a bit of trivia.
