Auto Brunch Event - St Ives

I attended again today. https://www.classicjalopy.com/2022/08/auto-brunch-st-ives-august-2022/ Always a good event. Patrick you would have enjoyed the fair number of really nice original old cars, like a Chrysler Lancer. Oversize would have liked the 220kw 560SEL with the rear roller blind...

    No longer Truck Like

I remember passing b-triples on my drive back from Adelaide via the barrier highway and broken hill. If you keep your foot to the floor while on the wrong side of the road (which I tend to do, to minimize my time on the wrong side), you are moving pretty quickly by the time you reach the prime...

    Car of the week

I see classic prices are being hit harder than I thought by the combination of high interest rates and high petrol prices. This very nice 450SLC would have gone well into the 30s 6 months ago, but at a very well publicised auction sold for $19k. Its one of the very few K-jet 450SLCs that came...

    79 280SE

After making a breakthrough getting the key to turn, I still can't get that collar off. the special tool I ordered was out of stock, so I got a refund but no tool. I'm trying a different vendor, but meanwhile also trying to get that collar off. I've done this on a W123 and W126 and this...

    Car of the week

Just shows highest bid, unfortunately doesn't tell you if the bid was successful either during or after the auction. Still, a good indication of what the market thinks certain cars and models are worth. There has been a definite and material correction in the prices after the COVID highs...

    Car of the week

Final lloyds results. Lot 211 was a really nice 450SEL, but with 400,000km on the clock, the market really devalued it. On the other hand 212A was quite rough, and did better than I would have thought.

    6.9 depreciation early on

I'm not so sure of that. The 6.3 was the more significant car because it was the first of its kind and spawned things like the AMG red pig and the like. Plus the 108/109 series is a lot more valuable in general than a W116 - at least 2x. You compare a 280SE 3.5 W108 which is a 45-55k...

    79 280SE

after successfully getting the car back on the road I have suffered a setback. I went to take the kids to a playground in the 280SE this morning, but the ignition key would not turn in the lock. After 20 mins of trying, we gave up and took my wife's modern car. This afternoon i've been...

    Tools & spares for trip

Just saw this old thread. I just did a 4,000km trip with a group of old benzes. This is what we actually used across all four, from my recollection: 1) Complete set of belts. 2) zip ties (fix a few things, including a broken SLS rod) 3) voltage regulator 4) Spare oil (although wasn't an...

Yes, they have done four systems for me and always looked after me and done a great job. A bit out of my way, but worth it for the result.

    79 280SE

The 280SE moves from being a garage queen to a rolling restoration now. Exhaust is fixed and it drives reasonably well once warmed up. Next couple of things include fixing the drivers seat and replacing the thermostat so it can warm up faster. More here...

    79 280SE

more here: https://www.classicjalopy.com/2022/07/w116-280se-drag-link-and-tie-rod-ends/ the 280SE had a wheel alignment done after I did all that work on the tie rods and is now at a muffler shop to have the rotten exhaust system fixed.

    The Death of Motec 6.9

sad to see it like that. I hope the other two W116's that WGB had found good homes, they were lovely and I would hate to see all work he put into them be all for nothing.

    79 280SE

Did the drag link, idler arm and all four tie rod ends. Idler arm looked a bit old and sorry, glad i did it, it was pretty bad when it came out. Only one tie rod really needed doing, but its not that big a deal to do both sides while I am there, and since I have to pay for an alignment, rather...
