Is the trunk lid handle on the centre of the boot made out of die-cast chrome?

Wheels are off to the chrome shop tomorrow.

Would like to get the trunk handle lid re-chromed.

Hi Tim if cast yes it cannot be re chromed. I would expect it to be cast but never having owned a W126 Michel, Styria & Ant would be ones to ask.:)

Tim, I'd be prepared to wager a new one from the classic centre may even be cheaper than re-chroming yours, and of significantly better quality the the result of re-chroming

...it is now a well established idiom that I know absolutely nothing of anything. Regards. Styria

N.B. I tend to agree with Ant - however generally the boot handles are of excellent quality from the manufacturer, and it should be possible to obtain an excellent second hand unit without too much difficulty.

Thanks for your advice Motec, Brian, Ant & Styria.

New trunk lid handle from the MB Classic Centre USA will cost $320 US Dollars.

Online Currency converter informed me it would be $344 AUS Dollars for the handle.

Include shipping costs from the USA to AUS.

I forgot to mention speaking to Hamilton Chrome shop on Friday the guy on the phone told me to carry out the following.

Get an ordinary fridge magnet and place it over the trunk handle and if the magnet sticks the handle can be re-chromed.

So I did just what was suggested and the magnet stuck to the trunk handle.

Get a quote from the chrome shop to have the handle re-chromed.

I will get the spray painter to remove the handle whilst he is removing the wheels send all of the parts to the chrome shop.

Keep you guys posted about the trunk handle re-chroming.

Cheers.

Hello Helmet,

Trunk lid handle also has dents and pitting on the LH side of the handle.

Chrome shop re-chroming the handle would be the way to go compared to a brand new handle from the US.

Still be using an original trunk handle that has been re-chromed.

Interesting point you make about never having seen a trunk handle having to be re-chromed Helmet.

Well, if your handle is damaged, you will need to find someone to repair it before it can be re-chromed. Timmy, go second hand. As Helmet says he doesn't know of any damaged ones - he may even have a second hand unit in stock. Regards. Styria

Actually the chrome on left side of my handle is worn through to alloy underneath. that is why I am thinking I will go mono chrome when I have car repainted . :)

I did locate a second hand trunk handle.

Was told 6 weeks ago the handle was in average condition $70 for the part.

Contact the guy again who has the handle for sale he was going to put the handle aside for me that was before Easter.

6 weeks has passed I have not chased up the handle not spoken to the guy for sometime.

Get on the dog and bone the phone and find out what is going on with the handle.

Helmet do you have a good condition non damaged handle for sale?

Cheers.
