Some of you know I am a fan of the Derby Bentley. This is B118HK, and early 4 1/4 liter from 1936 and one of the nicest coachbuilt bodies i've seen by J Gurney Nutting.

The dash and switchgear are simply "classic" and breathtaking in their detail. Maybe this is a little "over the top" restoration where the restorer is attempting to improve on the original ? In my opinion, the 'reddish' colour perhaps not indicative of what the manufacturer had in mind, but I also look a little puzzling at the red piping and highlights of the upholstery. I don't think that this was intended to be in 1936.

Anyone, I shouldn't criticize what is a magnificently restored car. However, I can think of a few cars of that vintage that provide me with more satisfaction. Regards Styria

Indeed. In the description the car was originally blue. The red was done in the 60s if I recall.

And here is B158LS, for sale here in Australia for AUD$150k. Being a late 4 1/4 liter, it is a nice example of the 'razor edge' coachwork that was popular in the late 30s. personally I prefer the earlier styles in the 3 1/2 liter and early 4 1/4's. Being a late car it has the overdrive gearbox (not an actual overdrive, but top gear is an overdrive gear).

Looks like the motor has been re-done at some point, a nice touch for the new buyer.

This car looks nice.

This is B185EJ.

I normally prefer originality, but the modifications on this car would seem to make it more usable - the MKVI conrods, uprated pistons and taller rear end ratio. The A/C also seems sympathetically installed.

Given so many old cars are seldom used, these mods would appear to make the car more usable in the modern world and hence probably the car is used more. I think if I was in the market for a car like this I would appreciate a car like this one - maybe not going to win awards but I could see myself using it.
