Interesting Sean - especially the mis-diagnosis. I recall being advised the steering angle sensor was faulty - approx. $3000 for a new column and sensor. I asked that the brake light switch be changed to see if that made a difference (a known fault in early MLs) and indeed that turned out to be the problem.
I replace the brake light switch in the ML every 2 years and that seems to keep the gremlins at bay. :D

Well Brain "Miss-diagnosis" covers a multitude of sins. In my experience it is largely down to people who don't know their job or even understand what they are trying to do. How many mechanics can see in their minds eye what is going on inside an Automatic Transmission as they Road test ? How many understand what the diagnostics are telling them. A fault in the steering angle sensor comes up,,,, but why, never enters their head.
