In another thread there is a discussion of flat batteries. There are many internet myths about batteries and charging.
Yes, you can spike an ecu even when using a protected charge pack. I've seen it happen because the charge pack was used when the key was still in the ignition and the ecu powered up. The luckless person who did this found himself liable for a new ecu.
The following makes for sensible advice:

Nice links Brian!

Battery myths abound mate and although most have a grain of truth they seem to harken back to the days of Generator and magneto lol.

What we need to remember is that the charging systems we employ today are constantly evolving and even since the early Alternator replaced generators the changes have been thick and fast.

So good quality 400 amp plus jumper leads with protection hooked up according to manufacturers recommendations and if in doubt swap the battery out.

My rule of thumb is New car? New battery.

Magneto? Yes - the PII has one and the voltage regulator is the driver.
A friend took his 20/25 on a long drive and forgot to turn off the magneto after the battery was charged. The passengers wondered what had happened when the battery below their feet exploded! Fortunately, it was contained in its original lead-lined steel cage.
