    8HP Transmission Swap

I'm with you Styria. Probably even more so if I owned a 6.9 but even for the 4.5 that'll eventually live in my car I came to the conclusion that the 3 spd will do (after a *lot* of trans swap research since the chewed up ring gear Problem #1 had me doing gearbox googling before anything else)...

    6.9 #6877

Masochism? Looks like it's coming to Sydney... Can't believe it made me glad I paid "only" $100 more for my 350. My roof rust is probably as bad or worse, but my everything else is less awful and mine came at the same ride height but the fix was infinitely easier... Sad to see another 6.9 go...

    Car of the week

None of the marques you mentioned produce dual cab tonka trucks that 18yo apprentices on red P plates can jack up to monster truck proportions with cheap Chinese faux beadlock wheels and 40" "muddies" that stick 2" out the guards and "protect" with 38mm cold rolled steel tube wraparound bullbars...

    Sydney German Car Show

One day I'll make it with my Panzer... until then I'll hope I can get there again as a punter, ideally before it's nearly over 🤦‍♂️

    Looking for 600 #1054

I assume you checked it wasn't the one for sale on Gumtree in Roselands that I posted in COTW back in Dec. '23? That one was still up a few months ago but the link is dead now (if it just expired it may get reposted, had dropped to $85k asking).

    8HP Transmission Swap

Ah OK I stand corrected. My point was "that guy likes to Frankenstein and mod and chase the youtube clicks", so... even more so than I realised I guess!

    8HP Transmission Swap

I advise extreme caution. If your goal is to add value for sale, consider that, at least imo, the only proven "market" for w116s in general and 6.9s in particular is collectors/afficionados/enthusiasts *of vintage mercedes*. There may be buyers who like to tinker, have their own...

    Motorex 2026

I love the "Ford Special Vehicles" plate on the XD van! Was the black porsche legitimate or just a kit & badge job? I ask because iirc the rears from Manthey are proper turbines, as in they have lower offset, the BBS typical flat lip and the aero hubcaps appear to cover the whole wheel spider.

    Car of the week

https://www.lloydsonline.com.au/LotDetails.aspx?smode=0&aid=68372&lid=5771167 They've added a few more lots BTW there's a Morris minor van on there that drove behind us the other day (presumably on way to lloyds). Sat nice on the road and the couple driving it didn't look stressed. Nice car.

    Car of the week

Wow, 4 grand already for a carbie six vs *ahem* 16 dollars for the 450... looks like the Benz market is picking up again if they're in decent nick, but backyard restos are nobody's game anymore 😪

    Closing in on a 6.9

Make friends with the local Benz parts hoarder, eg mb classic star or whatever. A lot of the bigger wreckers have closed down so Facebook marketplace/gumtree isn't what it used to be. There are good deals on some parts via ebay from Turkey (the guy with nos door seals and iirc he does electrical...

    6.9 cold start issue

All cars are happier running slightly richer ;) Until they start fouling plugs and sticking their rings of course!

    Vacuum Advance ID

Actually, come to think if it, wtf is the actual problem here: doesn't the car run just fine with the vac line to the can disconnected and plugged so it doesn't create a vacuum leak from the manifold? It's a vacuum retard, right, for less N2 emissions at idle and reduced knock sensitivity to...

    6.3 #2723

[Assuming the 6 3 starters are built like the w116 v8 ones, they sure look identical] If the battery is a bit weak it can voltage sag enough under load that it can't push the pinion out far enough to slot past the ring gear teeth. Then the motor contact doesn't close (fortunately) so the motor...

    Vacuum Advance ID

According to my google-fu and https://jetronic.org/de/forum/ignition/498-ersatz-fuer-unterdruckdose-am-zuendverteiler-w116-motor-450-se-bj-72 the Bosch part number for a 72 euro 450se is 1237121927 (which is Benz part A0001583018 if you're interested), so an assumption worth testing might be...

    Koenigsegg

Was helped immensely by exposure on Top Gear. Ben Collins (the stig) made it a bit of a mission to help them "fix" the first car to bring out its potential, he was very impressed with what they had acheived but also their willingness to take feedback. I guess it was the back-then equivalent of...

    Mercedes V8 Inlet Manifolds

Recall we eventually worked out that the Mampe car would've had to have many key components close to factory standard, since the series was a homologation one. I guess intake manifold may have been free, but usually under such circumstances throttle body (or at least venturi diameter) isn't. I'd...

    Tyres

I researched this to death when I thought I was getting the Disco Panzer back on the road "imminently" and again when making what I thought was the final push with the ute (which takes the same size on the front). Blair's Tyres in Peakhurst apparently deal Kenda tyres, and they had a suitable...
