Well I’m no closer to finding the article, but I did buy the April 2009 edition which featured this stunning 300SL! Pity it’s just a standard M103 and not an AMG modified M117…

I think it's all about the torque. Lots of cars have more power now, but they don't deliver the pulling power. The 6.9 just surges forward and drags the distant scenery closer. I have fond memories of driving the Fangio car on the Tullamarine Freeway and after putting my foot down maybe 1/2...

Basing it on the Red Pig: 420hp 6.8 391hp 6.3! The 6.3 is a little different since the std intake manifold was similar to the race version, whereas the std 450/560/6.9 intake was very different to the race version. Obviously the modified exhaust helped.

So doing some very basic math using % hp vs capacity the following theoretical increases could apply if you made the same vintage mods to different engines: 370hp from a 450cc 459hp 560 566hp 690! If you do the same based on the AMG SEC: 454hp 500cc 510hp 560 628hp 690! If you base it on % hp...

No the intake is split into 2 plenums with a TB each. The headers look pretty wild

Hi & welcome! You’d have to try to identify the part number & start searching. One from a wreck might also be an option unless accessibility is difficult. I’d like to know what coating was applied to these. I thought anodising was only for alloy? It doesn’t look like zinc & peels off fairly...

A sad state of affairs given its history. It is still a great car & the AMG parts just make it better!

I know Nick very well & he loves his car! Using the wrong oil with no zinc is apparently the cause along with no oil changes for an extended period.
