Tried all the sites to establish the build date on my Grey Import U K spec 107 280 SL Some don't work, the one that does says it is 2002. It is an '80 or '81 or '82 car. NRMA historic Plated cars come with free Road side assistance up to 1980. Vin is WDB10704222009946. It appears that 042 was used from the mid (?) seventies into the eighties and that the tenth number is the build date. Could it mean an '82 ? I don't know how you tell which decade it means. The car came with Victorian rego as an '81. The stamped vin no. ended in 46 but the rego papers said 49. What a hassle that was to get a blue slip to register it in nsw. I eventually had to play dumb and take the car without the Vic Rego papers to another workshop saying it was unregistered. I had borrowed some trade plates to do this. The engine no is 1109862201810 if that helps.

I assume this applies if you have the vehicle insured with NRMA?

Yes Brain, the NRMA was about half the cost ($159.30 ) of my previous Insurer Lumleys. I would like to be able to confirm that the car was a pre 1981 build to qualify for the included road side service when over 100Ks from home. I'm not sure about the 10th number in the vin . Does it mean the exact year of the build or the years of that model production. There is a lot of waffle on a lot of the web sites. Sean

Hi Sean, I to have a 107 280SL Euro Spec, import from UK 1985. The service book indicates it was first registered Dec. 1981 first service 590 miles Feb. 1982. vin WDB 10704222012229, engine 11099022000507. I can't work out the year of the build from the decoder but am sure it is a late 1981 model. I hope this helps.

I'm now convinced that my 280 S L is a 1980 car. Three USA Web Sites confirm that 042 ( after 107 ) in the Vin was only used until 1980. So I'm now confortable with the NRMA Insurance Policy being accurate and Road side assistance is covered when 100 Ks from home. Strange that I could not get this information from Europe or The U.K. Now I can die happy ! Sean

I agree!! I've been trying to find the build date of Nugget and this will definitely help! I have found dates on parts before but never realized there was so many throughout the cars. What about behind the instrument cluster??
