What a cool looking SL.

If you interior is NOT torn, or worn, I would not replace it, especially with black.

The sun would cook you on a warm day!

Cheers Michel,

It's actually ok, just looks bland,

Not the beaded seat cover!

If you do that you have to bolt a Raywood to the dash too ya know.

So... Check out GAHH's site DB, pure car porn mate and I think they can also do a new soft top if you want one.

http://www.gahh.com/index.php

I have seen before and after shots with guys that have gone the GAHH way and its as close to original as you can get, ignore the prices and PM Styria for a quote if you want to go ahead.

About the carpet?

I have a green 450SEL that need new felt carpet and side bits and I cant find anything even close in quality (Knox car carpets dont do em either) but it also looks like a huge and fiddly job to get it right on the 116 chassis so once again I reckon its a job for a good trimmer.

Failing that there are some great dye and resto products for leather too with Leatherique being one of the best I have seen or used.

In a word DB?

Nope.

Its not so much matching the style of carpet and the pieces may well be computer cut and having the foam/rubber backing sewn in is far better than any aussie product I have seen offered but actually fitting this stuff and getting the contours to match may well be iffy as hell.

I have looked hard and called industry contacts and they all tell me it cant be done unless you have a custom set scratch build and fitted by an auto upholsterer, even the carpet fitting requires tweaks and steam (I believe) so its a job for a good tradie.

And at $350 ish AU plus delivery at probably near the $100 mark via USPostalService youd be looking at $450-$500 for the carpet alone.

2 of mine need carpet and I have just given up on the idea until I can afford/justify the GAHH sets.

I dont want a perfect job BTW but I do plan on putting them on SV permits for weddings etc so it has to be tidy.

Hi Tony, there is no doubt that one can buy better on Ebay than from GAHH. I can't comment on the quality of the carpets on Ebay, but it is a competitive world outthere, so you just never know.

As far as the installation of replacement carpets is concerned, the loose pieces front and rear are no problem - you just lay them flat and, hey presto, the job is done - but wait, what about the backing that is fitted from new by Mercedes ? I mean, you do want to do things properly, don't you ? So, that's where the additional work starts. Separate the backing (if it's any good) from the old carpet and glue to the underside of the new carpet and keep your fingers crossed that it doesn't all fall to pieces when you are unglueing them. The next issues are the sides of the gearbox tunnel (fitting the new pre-cut pieces), as well as removing the old carpet material from the knee rolls and fitting the new pieces, and then you are faced with the small pieces under the front seats (relatively easy), and the twin sections alongside the inside sill panels. That really is a front seats out operation to do it properly - and one wants to do the job properly, don't you ? You then also have the sections in front of the back seat (again, fairly straight forward) and then, what about the rear parcel shelf ? Not an easy job, as it takes several hours, and requires removal and refitting of the rear speakers (what a pain) and you also have to remove the 'fit around' panel at the bottom of the rear screen and, then last but not least, the crowning glory of making up the cover for the first aid kit.

Add to that the fact that a trimmer prefers to supply his materials (money always comes into the equation) and if you find a trimmer to work for less than $50.00 an hour, you're doing well. So that's the 116. The 107s ? Even they are smaller, it is amazing just how much carpet material is required, especially if the boot is to be re-trimmed - and they are no easier than the large cars. Just my thoughts, for all that's worth. Regards Styria

N.B. I can still repeat my offer of a 20% discount on all products from GAHH - genuine, and off the recommended and advertised retail price..

Well for starters I do want to do it as cleanly as I can, I only have the passenger well with carpet so I'm assuming I will need an underlay of sorts?

What are knee rolls?

The boot carpet will do for now it's neat enough & looks to have been changed at some point, so I'm not too concerned about that

I have no rear speakers that I can see but would like to install some while I'm trimming, where do they fit? Do they get in the way of rear passengers?

Either way I guess it looks like I might have some fun learning along the way

Cheers

Hi Daddy-Benz, the rear parcel shelf and rear speaker details refer to the 116 Saloons. Good luck with your work. My post was also directed at Tony's remarks in his post. Regards Styria

Thanks Styria, That was pretty much what I was saying to DB.

The flat pieces are easy enough but the fiddly fitted bits are just that... Fiddly lol

And to get them right looked to me like a royal pain in the arse.

The Knee rolls DB, are the bits on the sides of the centre console.

As for the 20% Styria, if I were in a position to buy new GAHH id be buying them from you and possibly seeing if I could get them fitted by Parks.

Parks for a few reasons,
Firstly to hear him groan when he is asked to do the job lol

And secondly to see some of the other stuff he has in the workshop!

A few days at a Motel would be worth it!
