From the horses mouth, from a friend who was Service Manager and Transmission specialist of a major Benz Dealership in the eighties. His simple fix was adopted by Mercedes . One drill size up for the clutch feed to 4th gear in the valve body seperated plate. Mercedes supplied a modified plate as a Service fix. I'll get the exact detail from him and post it. There is nothing new in this type of modification on other transmissions , mainly some Fords. The trick is to find the right feed hole and the right drill size. This type of alteration is only as an as necessary basis as you may end up with a harsh shift. Other transmissions , eg., FWD Jacto respond by closing up the top gear clutch clearance. Trial and error is still alive and well. .... Sean

Yes Helmet, I guess you are right, we were diccussing a '81 380 Sl I had in '81. He was then the Transmission man in the Main Dealership. The Factories eventually get round to fixing the problems in the field. But the wheels grind slowly. It was almost one year and after multi complaints that I got some action. Not from Mercedes here, but after I complained to to Germany. Your car will be fixed Sir they said . It was, including the oil leak from the converter which I had also been told by the Main Dealer.. "They all Leak "

so go away !....Sean:(

It is strange that Mercedes should come up with such a 'faux pas' - I was under the impression that, in most respects, the boxes were well sorted. Sean and Helmet, do you guys know to what extent the boxes on the 126s differed from those of the 116 - the 6.9 (722.03) in particular ?

Also, has anyone ever given thought, or endeavoured, to introduce a fourth gear to the three speeders in the 450s and 6.9s ? Would, or could, that be an option ? I have heard it said that MB simply altered the valve bodies on those models to restrict them to three gears, although I would question the veracity or likelihood of such a modification. I am hoping to soon submit PDF documents in relation to various aspects of the 722.01 722.02 722.03 and 722.04 boxes. Regards Styria

Hi Styria ,
The 3 speed box was derived from the 4 speed box used in 6 cylinders of the same vintage.
