Basic description

1955 W180 220a Ponton sedan with Webasto steel sliding roof. Complete - though interior gutted.

Body

Externally covered with surface rust, though the structure, floor, "chassis" etc. is absolutely sound and rust-free. All door latches and hinges works like new.

There is a large but shallow dent in RHS front guard and similar in front passenger door (neither with sharp or creased edges), and the radiator grille is toast. The steel sunroof panel is damaged: its frame appears to be sound, but the skin needs replacing. The only rust hole is in the RHS front guard - in the corner near the A-post.

All glass is intact and there is a spare rear windscreen.

Interior

Disassembled but complete apart from headliner (turned to dust), wooden floor sections, and floor coverings.

Door cards are beyond hope and seats need everything replaced/rebuilt except basic structure (frames and springs). Time and rodents have taken their toll on the leather and stuffings.

There are two complete sets of interior wood - dash and window trims - and all the control knobs and handles for the dash are present and well preserved (they spent 30 years individually wrapped in tissue paper).

Mechanicals

Mechanically it is a no-goer. I've no idea if the engine can be turned, because there are essential parts missing (including some electricals). The left-hand tie-rod is broken (courtesy of an idiot tow-truck driver who fastened a chain to it!). The transmission is standard 4-speed manual, not Hydrak.

Documentation

Documents include: service booklet, maintenance booklets (x 2), instruction manual (one in English, one in German, and a spare - 220S - in English), and four issues of the NSW M-B Club newsletter Das Rundschreiben. Some of these documents are ratty and tatty, others are sound.

The car comes with Sydney-based service records starting in 1964 at 102,000 miles to 1971 at 181,000 miles - most of that servicing appearing to have been carried out by Arthur Rizzo Pty Ltd, Bourke St, Potts Point, NSW.

History

According to the Classic Center, this car was delivered to Stockholm, Sweden, on 12.01.1956 (ex-factory date). How and when it came to Australia is not known.

Although one would never guess to look at it, but this car won the "Best Unrestored" category in the 1976 Sydney M-B Club concours. In those days the car was owned by Mr Roger Phillips of North Sydney. (This information is in a copy of the NSW M-B Club magazine that came with the car.)

After the rego expired the car sat for 30 years in a dry-district shed awaiting restoration. (Apparently that owner got only so far as totally dismantling the cabin interior before life - or wife? - demanded his attention.)
