Nice looking vintage in console car phone,

There is a few other things of interest in the photo for the keen observer.

It's a bit of a mix, the steering wheel is from an early 107, it's either the timber has been replaced (early 116's had a dark pattern, stepped timber on the dash) or the steering wheel (looks more likely) had been added for looks. Whats with the microphone near the gearshift? No air and no power windows but has a sunroof and cruise control. Are there any more pics of the car Des? This looks interesting.

I was thinking that too, it's possible that it is. Tacho's were optional on 350's, 450's had them standard I think.

What is that gizmo with all the buttons on top behind the steering?

My guess it has something to do with the microphone down in the console, maybe it is some sort of dictation device? I imagine lawyers, writers etc... would find something like that quite handy.

The first car has a VK5 Verkerskurier (early version of traffic notification RDS). THe control for it is the extra rotary control on the add-on wood block in the oddments compartment. My red 6.9 originally had it fitted, and I would desperately like to get my hands on the bits to reinstate it.

Not only it must be rare, but I'd hate to think what the German collectors would want for something like that!

Its possible to buy the knob on-line for semi-reasonable prices, but the wood housing - I've never seen one for sale.

The first car must be a 280 with 4 speed auto because the speedo has shift markings I, II and III.

I am constantly amazed at how durable the velour interiors have turned out to be.

When new I thought they looked very fragile and wouldn't hold up but - cigarette burns and constant sunlight aside - they have proved me quite wrong.

The first car also has the very rare outside temp gauge n'est pas.

Where does one see this? Is it the dial thingy below the gear shift?

All this has me thinking - there are a lot of really rare options - is there a list of them out there?

One day in this life, I'd like a fully loaded W116 (preferably 6.9 of course) :

bullet proof
central divider
rear sunroof
ABS
verkerskurier
ABS
velour
phone
outside temp guage
everything else you can think of
