A friend is complaining his car wanders and tramlines despite being re-bushed and aligned. He has also fitted Maxxis tyres. Does anyont have experience of Maxxis?

I have Maxxis tyres on my 450SEL and I have no complaints even when driving spiritedly and on unsealed roads. Admittedly the car is not driven in the wet and the roads are relatively smooth around here unlike in Sydney or Melbourne .
How much slack does he have in his steering? There are a number of parts in the steering and suspension that can wear, did an expert on Mercedes do the job?

Fair question. Given the person who did the front suspension and steering work I would bet my last dollar that has been done to perfection; it has to be the tyres. But at $100 each they might well be the bottom of the Maxxis line rather than something better.

Hi BenzBoy, is it in fact a Mercedes ? The Steering Box can will most times be the culprit with too much wear in the straight ahead position. If you have further details regarding just exactly what has been replaced/reconditioned, one could perhaps come up with an answer. Regards Styria
How much free play is there in the steering wheel rim when in the straight ahead position? It may be that the problem is in the steering box rather than the front suspension. In fact how is the car on the road? Is there any rear wheel steer at any time? If there is a problem it may not be where you thingk it is. It may surprise you what simple problems a 116 expert could find and fix easily if one checked your car.
It was a W116 expert who set up the front end.
The Maxxis tyres have been traded in and the car is now normal. Only the tyres have changed and the handling has been restored.
