JohnS: You have done it again! You always seem to get the most appropriate website link every time!

The W116 was designed with zero offset steering. I do not know if it was the first to offer it. If it was not the first, it was certainly one of the first. All cars have it these days. It is much safer in veer and recovery manoevures.

Basically, zero offset sterring is where the kingpin axis passes through the centre of the contact patch of the tyre on the road.

This is why the offset of a wheel is so critical. Just make sure that the wheel that you choose achieves the w116's design requirement of zero offset steering. Seek professional advice as regards wheel choice.

I suspect that if you do not choose the correct offset value, the car's handling would be upset and there would be much more stress on the suspension bushing rubbers, thus shortening their life.

Ok,thanks for the input as i think wheels make a car..in a sence,as for the rubber bushings..are they availible in a kit?...or individually?
I mean for the whole suspension setup?
And where do you get e'm?

Do you own these wheels?

From the picture they look the wrong offset.

They seem like much later wheels with probably an ET35-39

Unless they are 18" or 19" they would not handle properly

Yes. I agree. Each wheel WIDTH would have it's own offset value to achieve to achieve zero offset. The table shown earlier in this thread suggests that also.

Wheel offset has nothing to do with the diameter, or the width. It depends upon wheel design and can sometimes be different front to rear.

Anything over e30 (Bundts), or below e11 (early AMG) could effect steering and handling, judging by what others have mentioned about the zero offset steering of the W116.

Most modern wheels have an offset well above e30 and will therefore rub on the inner guards, or suspension. Spacers can correct this issue, but are illegal in most states and can cause overloading of the replacement (longer) wheel lugs, wheel bearings, or stub axles.

BTW it's ok to have a sleeve fitted to the inside of the hole in the centre of a wheel, as it's essential that the centre hole is the same diameter as the hub spigot. Otherwise the wheel lugs will carry the weight of the vehicle and can fail under this excessive load.

The national standards (VSB14) talk about wheel track and wheel offset (Section LS):

http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/index.aspx

Based on this, the maximum permitted offsets on a W116 are between ET30 positive and ET1.5 negative. That's assuming that wheels originally offered were the Bundts (ET30) and the AMG optioned Pentas/Ronals (ET11). The standard prohibits reducing wheel track (positive offset greater than ET30), but allows an increase of track by 25mm, or 12.5mm each side.

Interestingly I measured the offset of a W126 steel wheel (6.5x14" - the same size as a 6.9 Bundt) and came up with a figure of ET31 positive. Note that the offset wasn't stamped into the wheel and it had strange vent fins on the inside.... If the offset of the steel W126 wheel is the same as the W116 ones, then you could fit ET31s. Note that I measured the offset from the front and the back and came up with slightly different figures of 30.5mm and 31.5mm, so I averaged the two. Measuring with a tape on a concrete floor obviously isn't that accurate...

But with the zero-offset steering it's probably still not a good idea to go beyond ET30 and ET11.

Mark, this issue was mentioned recently when Michel spoke about eliminating noises coming from the wheels on his Red Terror. It is absolutely essential to have the centre hub fit flush onto the internal diameter of the wheel itself. Anything less than precise, and the bolts are needed to centralize the rims. Chamfers on the bolts and correct machining of the wheel holes will help, but are not really good enough.

On GB, special specers were machined up which achieve the target of centalization, and Shannons have stated that as long as the wheels and spacers have come from an authorized tyre retailer, insurance is not affected. Regards Styria
