Hi Brian
Came across a very rare old Morris Minor that needs a new home. It could be the oldest one in Oz.
This old Morrie belongs to a 92yo lady who has had to move in to a home. Any money raised from the car will provide the lady with some pocket money whilst in care.
This is a Morris Minor Lowlight. It is either a late '48 or early '49 model. The chassis number indicates it is one of the very first made, being SMM 2189. Numbering started at 501. It has its original side valve engine number 4192. Although the car is very dirty (it has been stored in a garage for quite a while), the body is very straight with no obvious signs of corrosion. Even the paint work appears presentable. The interior is original, but quite worn. The roof lining is in tact. Someone has removed the radiator.
It's a big claim to say it's the oldest in Australia. However, an article in the UK claims that the 2nd oldest there is number SMM 982 and the 7th oldest in the UK is claimed to be SMM 3048, so this is somewhere in the middle.
Make a sensible offer so this cute old Morrie can go to a new home soon. I wish I had time to hose it down. Hopefully you can see the beauty behind the dust. 0422007159 Lloyd price between 2&3K PS found out today t was bought new by lady and her husband I a one owner and in my location

Yes to Lloyds credit he called last night to advise of sale. More details was it was 1 owner and last registered in 98. And at price he was after 2k for his Aunty I knew it wouldn't take long. I was also advised it was rust free and always garaged. Pictures were in the garage it was last parked in after lady's husband passed away.

I remember the Morris Minor MM well.
848 cc side valve motor, with headlights fully integrated into the mudguards.
My mother owned a green saloon from 1953 until 1960.

In the same period my dad owned a 1952 Humber Super Snipe.
The burr walnut dash in my 6.9 always reminds me of dad's Super Snipe.

Bit before my time . Though I have driven a low light it is the one I like. One off my Aunties in Wollongong had the original Mini and I mean original sliding windows , front firewall gearshift. 850 she used to pick me up from school when I lived in Wollongong as a kid before moving to central N.S.W . I loved that car always wanted it but my cousin crashed it on his p's . :(

From the Horses Mouth !
My Apprenticeship started in 1950 with the Main Agents for Morris and Wolseley Cars in Belfast. Every Screw and Bolt in these Cars is locked for ever in my memory Bank. The only issue with the Early Low Light Cars was that the Front Suspension had to be modified under Warranty . The Top Links were replaced using Rubber Bushes. Always the Apprentice's Job. These were very robust little Cars. Though the later ones , especially the High Light 4 Doors, were the one to have.
Why such a wide Engine Bay... well the original Design called for a Horizontal opposed engine , but alas the money was not available .... hence the pre-war Side valve Engine.

Would be a bit front heavy ?
Also , there was a Minor with O/H V conversion for sale a couple of years ago here in Sydney. There were Kits available from the U.K at one time.

My sister has one of the latest Morris Minors - she had the motor rebuilt last year - and it's a sweet handling little thing even on the rough country roads where she lives. However, a ball of fire it is NOT.
Regards,
Brian

That's down to the wide track and the independent Torsion Bar Front Suspension.
Nothing new in that ...but a revelation in a small low cost Car in the Day when the rest were still using Pre War Cart springs front and back.

Yes, that would have been the ill fated 16 cylinder BRM. BTW, one of my ex brothers' in law (I've had a few) used to have a light blue Morris Minor - his first car. I remember a trip from Sydney to Inverell - took twenty hours. Regards Styria

N. B. Incidentally, I also recall my first ride in a Mini - I was living in Moree at the time, and the Mini was a newly introduced model - straight off the production line. I remember its sure footedness, and the way it would reach fifty miles an hour without any effort.

Ah Styria , lest we develop Rose Coloured Glasses.... These Morris "Minor" Cars were dangerous in the Braking Department from 30 MPH onwards. Not alone of course .. Renault 750's on the same day were just as bad... no , even worse. All had excellent Road Holding... maybe they ran out of Money when it came to stopping them .
