Here's a new one. It has the usual problems, but it's a Euro version and a desirable colour combination. It looks like a good project:

At least he seems to be honest in his description of a car that requires a fair bit of tidying up.

Front seats are cracked!

Engine bay needs a good clean up.

Unfortunately rust in the bottom of the doors is quite common. Less so on later models.

Unless the interior was replaced at some stage during it's life this is what the interior of a 33 year-old car will look like. Particularly one that wasn't designed for Australia's harsh climate.

Yes if it was mine the engine would've been treated to a tidy-up. It doesn't take that long and the results are usually very satisfying...

Those cracks can be mended, I've seen it done with flawless results. (Leatherique I think)

Tony, we've not had good results with Leatherique - it's possible that we're not doing things properly. One day I would like to work with someone that could illustrate how to perfect that particular rejuvenation process, and I might become a believer. In the meantime, I'll hang back.....

Most problems with 116s relate to collapsed backseats due to horsehair turning to brown dust, the callicoe ripping and not holding the stitching together, whilst the front seats specialize in collapsed seat bases and cracking of the leather, as well as the aforementioned callicoe (?) and stitching. Well the E-bay auction finished and it apparently sold for less than $4K; a rather disappointing result considering it looks quite nice in the Carpoint pics. I wonder what happened?

I noticed another 450SEL sold on E-bay for quite a high price considering it was really sad (I went and saw it) and yet it's been re-listed. Seems there's a lot of 'buyers' out there that don't come up with the goods. I assume they constantly change identities due to their poor feedback....

4 of the last 8 fleabay auctions Ive bid on for cars or parts have had shill bids (Sellers or friends of sellers bidding to inflate the auction price).

it is getting harder to tell but it is still possible and some of these people are as dumb as dog poo when it comes to dodgy stuff.

Zero feedback or low feedback, 100% activity with the seller (Only ever bid on the sellers auctions) and bidding till they have tripped my high bid (Ive placed a high bid of say $1000 and they chip away at minimum bid till they hit $1001 and then sit.

This is why so much stuff gets relisted after being "Sold" although the dumbest Ive seen is when a fake bidder relisted the item they just "Won" using the exact layout as the auction they won including the contact number and name.

So I now have my own fake ebay account................ and will happily play along.

So here's the thing...

IF you dont want to be at the mercy of the auction gods, place a fixed price or nearest offer classified advert on fleabay if you must sell there.

Or use trading post or any one of the numerous glossy classifieds sites.

Fleabay is good for buying but lousy for selling cars.

Anyway, What it all boils down to is that a Car is only worth what people are willing to pay for it.

And with exotic auto's (And I feel the 6.9 is Exotic) the sell price rarely reflects the perceived value and those who know the cars would prefer to pay as little as possible because they know what expenses are yet to come and don't want to over capitalise.

Ad says this is a 450SEL 6.9 for sale sorry I don't see the 6.9 badge on the boot only the 450SEL badge.

Hi Tony, no under bonnet shots of the 450SEL in the Carsales photos from what I could see.

Speaking of under bonnet shots I need to take some photos of the engine bay in the 260E and post them here for you guys to see.

Should have remembered to have done that before!

Yet another unfortunate owner that thinks they have the real deal. With the average performance of a 450, they must wonder what all the fuss is about....

A giveaway is the lack of headlight wipers and the chassis number.

BTW Tim I'm sure we'd all love to see pics of your clean engine bay!
