Does anyone know if parts from the 450 and 6.9 injection systems are interchangeable? Are the 6.9 Euro and Aussie systems the same? I'm thinking about putting Blue Flame back on petrol...

Hi Mark, most parts are interchangeable. Fuel Distributor - the same. Injectors - the same. Inlet Manifold - different. Fuel Lines - Injectors to Fuel Distributor - different (in length). Those fuel lines will constitute most of the grief you are likely to experience. Also, there will be slight variations with vacuum line arrangements. Other than that, you'll be sweet. Fuel lines are easy, take an example of what you want to a good Brake place or Hydraulic hose specialist and they will make them our of anything you want.

Same goes for Power steer hoses although custom brake lines can be a bit of a bother due to ADR's, Custom Hydraulic clutch lines however suffer no such fate *Nudge nudge wink wink*

Hi Tony, I wouldn't be so sure about the injection lines. The end fittings would be difficult, if not impossible, to replicate but, more importantly, the ID of the pipes is quite small. I suspect that the internal size would be very important in providing the correct fuel pressure from the fuel distributor to the injectors. I may well be wrong, (and hopefully I am), but I have a hunch.....Possibly Helmet may also wish to come in on this debate as he appears to be well versed with the workings of our cars. Regards Styria

Im assuming it works with Mercedes as it has in the past with K jet Volvo's and yes the pipe ID was checked and replicated, I've also bought steel injector line from the US and somewhere I also have a fairly expensive bending and flare tool for small OD steel line which has never been used lol

Worth checking out though.

Hi Tony, you obviously have good contacts which, in this instance, I have never had cause to pursue. I certainly hope, for Mark's sake, that it is as easy as you describe it. Regards Styria

Easy is relative to the urgency and/or lack of other options Styria, IF you can get them cheaply and easily then obviously that is the option to follow and genuine is always best.

I just found that working with some cars I got a far better result getting pipes custom made than I did buying OEM parts and that the quality was better "custom".

With Mercedes Benz I don't think this would be the case (Apart from possibly the cost factor) and this was why I had associated trades who work with pipes and hoses manufacture bits and pieces for me which were cheaper, locally available and often of a far higher quality than the OEM parts sourced through correct channels.

I must add though that I was working with US GM/Pontiac/Chevrolet as well as Volvo and Jaguar where a Power steering hose cost was well into the hundreds of dollars genuine and yet only $70 at the time custom made to a higher spec.

Even the Grey import Jap "Boy Racerus" cars gave us grief so it became second nature to find alternate quality sources.

My nature is to think outside the box but it is also to ensure the quality and note the fine details especially when it comes to safety items and this practise is not uncommon in the motor trade but more a well kept secret because charging $380 for a $70 part makes good financial sense too :)

Well my cheapest option would be to just take the parts from Skye. Or I could go down the Motec trail.... And going by the price of fuel, that's not such a silly idea!

Its actually a fairly viable idea Mark, just pick Motecs brain on the issues (If any) he faced.

So Motec does the manifold need to be machined to accept current era injectors? I noticed Dan in the US had to do quite a bit of machining...

The fuel rail shouldn't be much of a problem to fabricate and the pump etc should be fine. Probably the worst part would be the expense of an ECU and then the wiring. Could I expect better fuel economy than a standard 6.9?? I know I shouldn't use 6.9(L) and economy in the same sentence (sorry)!! LOL! ;):D
