Gentlemen,

I've just received my car insurance renewal for my seven vehicles (under one classic policy) and was shocked to see that the premium had doubled :eek::eek:

I have been with Ryno Insurance since I left Shannons' in disgust many years ago because of their new Suncorp-inspired policy changes.

But this doubling of the premiums (due to Ryno changing underwriters) is simply shocking.

Can you advise what insurance companies you are using for your classics?

Many thanks
Michel

Hi Michel,

I use NRMA Classic car insurance.

It has all the same type of things Shannon’s and others offer, but also recognise NRMA years of membership.

I have always shopped at every renewal, but they have always been the cheapest for me.

I am happy with Shannons, but then again I have not lodged any claims. Gleaming Beauty is insured for $29,000 (after inspection two years ago), but they also underwrite my Third Party Property Damage Policy on the Captiva. Regards Styria

Shannons yes.... very competitive. I have just switched from fully Comp. to 3rd party Property on my C250 as it has not turned a wheel in 5 days. We are in self isolation ( very vulnerable in our mid eighties ) A saving off $800/year.
Our second Car C 200 is now locked in our Garage and uninsured.
Cost $350...... budget $460.:)

I know as much as I know, but I always seem to hear sometimes that there's someone new who does Classic Insurance.

After a fair bit of research, I have found that NRMA has the best deal for me.

Yes it is a fact of life today that every expensive has to be queried every year.
I have found that the Banks and the Insurance Companies need the closest watching.. The Dealerships into your Pockets,:) if you let them.

I’ll check them out next year

I was going to move to Ryno last year, but in the end I didn't as I kept having to chase them and they had a couple of policy restrictions I didn't like.

My shannons renewal came through at materially the same as last year.

I was a long time Ryno customer until a year ago when a claim I made was handled very badly, for example trying to BS me with the provisions of the coverage (trying to tell me I didnt have choice of repairer when I did), not returning calls, slow processing time, and having to provide the same info multiple times (they were running two separate files on the same claim at the same time and the one person handling both didn't make the connection - no joke) and even BS'ing when I asked them whether the claims department was in-house outsourced - they said it was in-house, but I eventually found out that their underwriters made them outsource their claims handling to an external mob.

As a footnote, I offered feedback to their head office in QLD throughout the process, and was advised multiple times management would call back, and the staff even freely said they have been getting lots of complains about claims and 'management is very interested in this'. I never got a return call (evidently not giving a #### about negative customer experiences) and after my car was fixed and hire car was reimbursed, I walked.

No idea if their service still sucks (after many years of being fantastic), but the above is my experience.

I looked at NRMA classic, however the have (had?) dumb rule of not being covered if you take the car into 'a major shopping center'. They could not define what a major shopping center was, and told me this would be decided at claim time. I told them there was no way I was going to be wondering if I were covered should I take my car into a shopping center carpark because there is everything from a small suburban shopping center, right up to a large stockland and several in between near me. In fairness, I was not going to be taking a classic car into a shopping centre very often, if ever, but the cloud of not being covered would hang if I ever did.

After all of that, and quite ironically, I went to Shannons and am still there despite having sold my Mercedes (my daily is still insured there).

The problem can be that unscrupulous People try to defraud Insurance Companies I personally know of a Cousin who burnt His car as he could not keep up with the Hire Purchase. This was years ago. Unfortunately today many poorly trained ( low Cost Employees ) are just reading from a Song Sheet.
A recent experience with a Suncorp subsidiary pressuring me to pay an exorbitant amount for paint damage I was not responsible for. The right hand did not know what the left hand was doing. They took the word of a client who was lying. They eventually went away.......

I did some digging and found out two more insurance companies that specialise in classics/vintage/special cars.
One was Famous Car Insurance and the other Enthusiast Motor Insurance.

I called the first (Famous) five days ago and was told that someone will call me back, because only that person looked after insurance of multiple cars and I knew that person to be one of the bosses.

Then I called the other (Enthusiast) and was put immediately to a person who took all the details and emailed me back a very good proposal.
After a few days of toing and froing and fine tuning the policy, I just accepted it today and paid my first instalment.
It is better and much cheaper than the original Ryno quote and I could talk to people who understood cars, their rarity and value.
I get the usual lifetime no claim bonus, one free windscreen per year and salvage rights. The only minor drawback is that one MUST name every driver for any or all the cars. (but mechanics/panel beaters and valet parking attendants are all covered)

Oh.. and the guy from Famous... I'm still waiting for the call back :D :D

I assume your car costs such as insurance are a tax deduction Michel?

Insurance is always a tough one because the thing that matters is how the companies behave when you need to make a claim. Most people don't make many, and it can be really hard to find good information about this side of insurance companies.

I had a look at the enthusiast website and they mentioned they like to equip cars with trackers/immobilizers. Michel, did they require this of you?

Also, what is the penalty of a non-named driver driving the car. On my wife's policy the penalty is double the excess, but you're still covered.

There was no mention or request of immobilisers nor trackers, however, if your car is driven by someone who is not on the policy and that person has an accident, then you're not covered
So I essentially put my wife and my son on the policy.
Now, if I decide to lend the car to someone, all i need to do is to call the insurance company and add that person. And as I mentioned mechanics/panel beaters and valet parking attendants are all covered.

Its interesting, they must have worked out that there is a material portion of claims from other people driving the cars. I guess it makes sense, generally the owner is going to be more careful of their pride and joy than say 'uncle wally'.

I rarely let others drive my cars, but have let other enthusiasts who I know have a go, for example SEL_69L took my SLC for a drive around the block at the last GTG, and I drove styria's 6.9 as I had not yet driven one. I also let my brother who now lives in Perth use my 300SE for a week.
