Researching a new small Car for a Granddaughter it struck me that the lower cost models are now offering a 5 year warranty with the proviso that the car goes back to the Dealership every six months. Un necessary of course. Boosting Dealership profits to keep the manufacturers Sales out lets afloat. Thin margins on Sales on sub $20,000 Cars. Though the car does not have to go to a dealership for maintenance Service. The Law says that as long as the service is done by a Licenced Mechanic , the Manufacturer must honour the Warranty.
No problem to get around... simply have your Mechanic stamp the Book twice at an ample yearly Service. Thus far the Suzuki Swift at around $17,:cool:000 looks to be the best choice ??

Sean,

Most dealers now offer capped price servicing to match their now lengthy warranty periods.

Kia offers 7 years for both.

In most cases, their capped price servicing is cheaper than what now can be offered at private workshops.

Not to mention factory warranty on all work and parts when done at the dealer.
Plus with a weeks notice, you will usually get a free loaner for the day.

However,
You are absolutely correct, it does not HAVE to go back to the dealer for servicing.

Just don’t get caught not servicing by the book.
If it needs 2 a year, do 2 a year.
This is what makes reliable cars (like the Suzuki) reliable and enjoy the reputation they have.

Patrick are you missing the point.... Modern cars have Belts that don't stretch
Ignition that is digital and automatic.. fuel Systems that are Computer controlled.... Brake Pad warning lights.. Oil that lasts for 15,000Ks if necessary.
Virtually maintenance free. So what's the point, only to finance the Dealer.??
Both our 80,000K C Class Mercs have only seen a Dealer for Warranty issues. Serviced once a year mainly for an Oil change and a look round underneath plus a look at the Tire wear. To date .... one set of Tires and Brake Pads.
Plus air Filters.
Both still drive in a, as new fashion.
And Yes, I did change the Transmission oil and the Cabin Filters at 60,000Ks
Smile as you go under !!!!!! $$$$$ wise:eek:
