I found the engine first and then tracked down these very rare cars. Few would know they ever existed since there was only 2 cars and they only competed twice before being mothballed. Apparently at least one still exists and I’ve love to take a closer look at them! Very few photos exist on the web so if anyone’s going to Germany in the next few years....

Info on the large die cast model is interesting too. However, I doubt the race car would’ve been fitted with a full exhaust, so it may not be accurate, but I’d be happy to be proven wrong!

So it’s likely to be the most powerful naturally aspirated M117 ever made (338kW)!

In comparison:

VL Group A (Walkinshaw) road car 185kW,
1987 VL Race car: 320kW.

VN Group A road car: 215kW,
1991 VN race car 388kW.

I'm slowly finding out more about these cars.

The distributor was bipassed and the racecars used a Capacitor Discharge Ignition System. This is odd, since you can clearly see there's no distributor when in the racecar, however the engine on the stand still has a distributor (perhaps an early version),

They apparently used 2 separate fuel injection systems,

Obviously the manifolds were custom and they used AMG cams.

I've been trying to track down the people involved in dragging the car from AMG storage back in 2005 but so far no luck. One of the cars was displayed at the Techno Classica in Essen back in 2005. I'm not sure if this means that only one car survives (number 6) and the other (number 5) has disappeared....
