78 280se

Hello all! I found this board while trying to look for some information on a 78 280se. My father just bought one and were going to do some maintenance to the vehicle. Sadly he doesn't live close to me, but I need to pick up some transmission fluid for it. Im trying to find fluid capacities for the car but I'm having no luck. If anyone knows how much transmission fluid it takes it would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance

The 1980 Aus techincal reference says :

6.6 litres for initial filling
5.3 litres for oil change.

In my experience, if one drains the torque converter (as one should) and the oil cooler, it takes nearer the 6.6 than the 5.3 to fill it up.

Correct filling procedure (after draining tranny, torqe converter and tranny cooler :

a) put in 5 litres
b) run the engine with tranny in park, and engine at idle speed for a few minutes (to allow time for the pump to fill up the torque converter)
c) check the level and add more fluid to bring it mid way between the min and max marks
d) repeat c) a few times at intervals of a few minutes until it seems to stabilise
e) drive car and bring tranny up to temp
f) check level and correct if necessary

its very important not to overfill.
