450 slc breaking down under acceleration

hi all, my 107 is breaking down under heavy acceleration, the mechanic tested her on him tune machine and said all looks ok. the problem is still there, does anyone have any ideas of what to check ?

Hi GarryE, there are two components that make an engine go - fuel and electricity. How well a car goes does depend on the degree of efficiency of the various components. So a car might go well, or just go.

Your mechanic has had the car on a tune-up machine, and everything checks out okay. Therefore, one would assume that plugs, high tension leads and most electrical components are in good shape. Keep in mind you have the coil, distributor, leads, suppressors, distributor and cap and the ignition control unit.

That then takes you to the fuel system - Fuel Filter - how long since it's been replaced ? Fuel Pump - has your mechanic checked the amount of fuel flow and is the pump breaking down partially in the higher rev. range ? How old is the pump, and does it hum loudly ? A good pump will be almost silent in operation. You can also disconnect the electric plug (with blue plastic cap) that connects to the switch that is located to the right of the fuel distributor on the Inlet Manifold. Disconnecting that switch ensures a continuous flow of fuel even with engine not running.

There are a few things that you can work on - all of the above assumes that you have the K-Jet Fuel system. Keep in touch, and try and supply an answer to some of the queries I have raised. Regards Styria

Heavy acceleration, id be looking at fuel filters first, then air filter and then ignition system.

Update,
Fuel pump has been changed along with fuel filter, noticed a slight noise from pump, She is all ok now, yeha! power is back

I figure an old or clogged fuel filter. It lets a small flow but not a large flow.

To me, that would explain the car's 'before' behaviour.

How long ago was the fuel filter replaced? Reason for asking is that the injectors may need cleaning.

Hi GarryE, thanks for bringing us up to date, and even better now that a fairly simple replacement has taken care of your problem.

Okay, I now have got a proposition for you - and please consider it not only fairly, but also favourably. I see you live at Penrith and you are also a long standing member of this terrific website (I am talking about topklasse) - did you know that it is a beautiful drive from Penrith to Windsor basically following the river ? So you don't know what's coming ? From Windsor to abl567's "smoking joint" at East Kurrajong is only a short drive just past Wilberforce. There, of all places, we are going to celebrate Christmas in July, on 24th July to be precise and you are specially invited.

We have a terrific snowfight scheduled on the day (honestly it snows there !) and you can be the first to chuck a snowball at the Godfather ! Just think of the thrill he'll get out of that. So maybe you can make it ? We'll keep the invitation open to you. Regards Styria
