280S Info please

Ive stumbled on a 280S locally, it is a 75 model according to the current owner and he is keen to get rid of it.

it was a daily driver but has now been sitting for 5 years, shedded.

He says is has a 4 barrel carb, is that correct?

the car also has 500'000 ish km

What can I expect?

Thanks,
Tony

The car was a daily for 5 years and then parked after a new car came along, the car has been where it sits now for a further 5 years.

My son gets his license in 12 months and loves the 450's but can not drive them as they are a V8 so i thought this may be suitable, Jenna also likes it.

Thats ok Michel I didn't take it to heart mate :D

This find came about because of a chat with a local I know who was rationalising his cars and had been agonising over the Benz.

I reckon its worth a shot and time will tell what she ends up being as I haven't told my Son yet.

The weird thing?

It was the colour and the hubcaps that grabbed me, and the car screams Wedding car...........

Now if I could only remember how to go about getting an SV license for the car.......

So Im taking the old girl and I'll give her a cleanup and park her in the sun awaiting Alex's reaction.

If he wants to drive it then he can but she will belong to me until he can show me he is capable of looking after her.

That and I can full comp insure her and make sure everything is correct.

From my cursory inspection she has no rust and how hard can a Carbed 6 cylinder be to maintain?

Or are they famous last words? lol

BTW do these things have SLS?

Hi Mark, apologies for not reading your post properly. Regarding the option codes - it would probably be somewhat unethical on my part to utilize the other crowd's facilities. I will work out something in the end, but not from their source. Regards Styria

Yeah I was thinking along similar lines and I wonder where the information was originally sourced? Always better that way, just in case there's been errors during transfer.....

Tony you may have probs with the carb since it's been dry for so long. It might pay to find an expert on these and put a kit through it. I doubt it'll have SLS. Absolutely awesome if it has no rust! Hope the rats haven't eaten all the wires!!! It might pay to have a look.... (pics as well). To me it screams manual conversion!!!! Haha!

thanks for that!

Im going to very carefully do some prep before turning the key, my usual routine involves upper cylinder lube into the cylinders plugs out ofcourse but this time in using Inox, I also drain the oil and chuck a cheapy filter on and then fill with a high zinc content oil (Nulon high mileage in this case which is a 20/50)

I leave the oil to drain for a day or so at an angle that encourages sludge escape.

I'll drain coolant fluids from the block and system and refill accordingly and I will have on hand a roll of Silicone blue heater hose and top/bottom rad hoses.

Drain fuel tank and check for rust or paint flake and refill with Caltex Vortex 98 (A Non E10 fuel)

Add workshop battery and once the engine is filled with fluids again I will crank slowly listening for nasties with the plugs out, give it another spray with Inox and then crank till oil pressure comes up, then add plugs and check carby for weeping or leaks and see if she fires or tries.

When I took the pics BTW I had a sniff for rodents (got a good nose mate) and i looked for tell tale signs under the bonnet too and it looked clear.

the Ghost who services euro cars In Meeniyan that our esteemed member from Bass coast mentioned also serviced this car and his work is evident in the quality hoses and MB parts stickers on a few bits and pieces.

So now its a suck it and see exercise I guess.

it'd be nice to be minus SLS I guess and i will check when i get my grubby hands on her but first things first.......

A thorough hand wash AND if she scrubs up ok maybe even a wax!

Why?

Coz im weird, and because Jenn is far more forgiving about immobile objects if they are Shiny :D

Ta for the tip on the carb BTW.

Well, I must admit that I'd have some trepidations buying a car in this condition. Maybe if I was twenty years younger, I might consider it but nowadays ? No, I'd be worried that I would be able to do justice to the car. Regards Styria

What was playing on my mind when I first heard of this car was that id been looking at W123 280TE's and that spare engine bits wouldn't hurt and considering I have 2 other S class Benzes other bits would come in handy.

Then I had a quick look, checked the underside of the doors for rust and a bit later was told of the service history and decided that for a few hundred dollars it was too nice to go to scrap.
Considering scrap prices currently sit near $800 a ton if I was to strip it then id get my purchase price back on the shell alone.

I make no bones about it being an emotional decision either and remembered all the godawful wedding cars ive driven over the years and envisioned the car gleaming with White ribbons lol

Ive also just started to come out of a long cash drought Styria and because Ive been good with my car spending cutbacks and this household being more than fairly democratic (it helps having a wife who likes old cars) my disposable income level allotment went up from Nothing to something usable.

this means a real Mig, concrete floors in my huge shed, a rewire and a 2 post hoist and some better tools so Id best have some stuff to play with lol

I also have a very good long time friend who had Panel shops for years and is a "Gun" painter with his project as proof which takes care of the one area I am lacking in being Paint and Panel.

So Id be mad to not have a few options.

So the resto order is as follows for now.

Lili goes first as she is by far the best.

then depending on the condition of the 280 the 280 is next on the slab.

The brown 450 has issues and is currently off the menu but not to the scrap for bits stage until Ive had another look at her so she is in dry storage.

All cars in the barn on a sand pad till the floor is laid, windows slightly open and my rodent bait stations are showing me no new nibbles now for a month so i think ive got the mouse issue licked and I am no longer cutting or buying hay so that should make sure the mice stay away lol

Got rid of the cattle BTW, saw the current issues comming a mile off and swithed to sheep.

I was horse free until a few weeks ago when my Mother in law flew in and retired her old horse here so we can rehome it grrrrrr
