Willing to give it my best shoot. Have only driven a Silver Wraight as the oldest Rolls Royce I have driven. And that was 27 years ago.

I was very privileged to be allowed to drive the Professor's Phantom II and that was a challenge to master the gear shifting.

But it was a wonderful drive, keeping up with the modern day traffic.

Nice pics.
Is this because the box has no synchromesh or are there other differences as well? The oldest car I have driven is my 1954 light 15, which has (weak) synchros on 2nd and top.

Jelous much the P11 Silver Wraith was a manual as well. Shift in usual place over near the door.

It was because of the lack of synchromesh and yes the gearing was near the door from memory.

I am sure the Prince of Arabia could drive anything he put his mind to ...

Makes sense. The PII is a very striking car. And from what I gather during the depression RR didn't want competition for it, hence buying bentley and removing the 8 litre, the key competition for this car. I can imagine during this time there probably wasn't room for both in the market.

By the time of the Great Depression Bentley was insolvent - like so many other high end manufacturers. R-R bought Bentley simply to stop Fraser Nash from doing so and initially employed WO to work on the Silent Sports Car until he left in the later 1030s and went elsewhere to design engines for companies such as Lagonda.
Now the irony is that Fraser Nash continued in a number of manufacturing roles until more recently it went off-shore to Switzerland where it develops control systems. Recently it retuned to the UK and is the current owner of Bristol Cars who are reportedly planning a new model line. This may never happen simply because of the huge development costs.
During the 1930s it was the 20 H.P. and then the 20/25 H.P. that kept the R-R factory afloat. The Phantom range was not enough in itself to bring in sufficient money to keep the company solvent.
The claim to fame for PII Continentals like mine is that they were the last line of cars designed and worked on by Royce himself who developed the PII Continental despite objections by the sales staff. My PII is one of the very last handful, if not the last, of cars that Royce himself worked on before he died.
Regards,
Brian

And I would still buy the 8 litre over a P11 nothing personal Benzboy. But it just pushes my buttons so to speak. The stock market crash was in 29 by the way which lead to Bentley and others being insolvent. It's well known effects lingered for most off the 30's . Leading to many high-end car deaths Duesenberg pierce-arrow among many others.

I didn't know that Frazer-Nash was still in business in any capacity. I had assumed they disappeared many years ago. I always associate them with the chain driven cars, perhaps the new bristols could be chain driven. :D Would be a bit of a departure from what a Bristol is supposed to be.

Its been a long time since Bristol had a new car, it would be a big ask in these times to come out with something that can pass modern day standards. Engines can be procured from one of the big manufacturers, but the basic platform will be harder. Maybe they can collaborate with Tatra!

By all mean do; it's may stay unpaid for a while.
I have driven an 8 litre Bentley with blower and it was a bit like riding wild bull in a rodeo - great fun but damned scary.

Brian

Seeing that bikes attract a brief mention, and wild rides, try riding a Husqvarna 500 Automatic, fitted with nobbly tyres on the road at 140 -150kms/hour and experience the handlebars going from side to side yet the bike still tracks straight and true - now, that is an experience and it's happened to me - or another time, riding my Montesa 360GP on a stretch of country road (no street lights) and the back wheel locks up with a seized engine - inspection of the tyre skid marks (not MINE !) next day revealed a straight and true black tyre strip the length of one hundred feet. More about 'a' or 'the' Bentley next post. Regards Styria

When in Macquarie Street several years ago, I heard a noise almost that of a Helicopter sound coming up from Hunter Street, and turning right into Maquarie. It was some form of Bentley, at least a car very similar to the pictures provided by Geoff and, honestly, I could only just stand there open mouthed and marvel at the glorious sound of the Bentley accelerating. I am sure it was one of Bentley's famous Open Tourers. Regards Styria
