Battery test carried out yesterday test came back fine.

The charging system was tested as well and the test result was low.

Existing alternator is the original Bosch unit same age as the car this year in fact!

Quote was $200 to recon the alternator plus the voltage regulator will be inspected.

That's an excellent price and far cheaper than a new alternator. Does it include removal and refitting of the alternator?

Good morning Brian,

Certainly glad I double checked.

No there would extra cost to remove and refit the alternator auto electrician told me it would be approx. $180 to $250.

Quote was $200.

Now the extra 'approx' cost to remove/refit alternator $180 to $250.

Total cost between $380 to $450 to carry out the job.

Does seem expensive to recondition my existing Bosch alternator?

The original Bosch alternator was reconditioned in my 260E back in 2012 total cost was $250 carried out by an auto elec in the Bay.

The 260E and 300SE have the same M103 3ltr straight six engine.

Surely both cars would have the same Bosch alternator?

Red battery light is display on the console.

The battery was tested and the test came back okay.

Charging system test results was 'low'.

Thanks Brian.

I will get the alternator repaired.

Prefer to keep the original Bosch alternator.

Can not rock up to the Concours with an aftermarket alternator simply loose points!

Prices for new alternators do vary from $500 to $1000.

Cheers.

Tim how about a good used unit for $50. I would think that the would be little difference in any of them. The wreckers must have them coming out of their ears. They all charge a 12 volt battery and would be mounted the same way ???? No!

The time required to remove/replace an Alternator on a 6.9 would be no more than one hour - say, even two thirds of that. $50.00 max. ?

Unless the Alternator is a basket case, in which case one may as well throw it out, replacing the bearing (seldom required), and Regulator (about $35.00) and the Auto Electrician's fee should come to no more than $120.00 tops. I usually can look forward to some small change from $200.00. Regards Styria

Well you would think so?

Price goes quoted from $200 to almost $380 to $450 to recon the existing alternator.

My Benz mechanic is back in the workshop next week he has many years of experience.

I would not even doubt he could remove the alternator for me good idea if I watch and learn whilst he removes the alternator.

I have never removed an alternator before would not even know where to begin?

Auto Electrician well that is not me.

Anyhow none the less I will get it sorted out.

2017 off to a cracker of a start alternator needs some TLC.

Well the alternator is 28 years old this year.

I am 9 years older than the 300SE maybe my alternator needs a recondition as well?! Lol.
:D

With thanks to my mechanic the alternator removed.

Take the Bosch alternator to the auto electricians.

Whilst the car is at my mechanics the sunroof actuator rods, wind deflector plate and boot seal will be replaced with new parts.

That's the latest.
